My little boy Burt a Peruvian guinea pig is having trouble breathing as you can hear him wheezing and heavy breathing he always keeps sneezing he is a very friendly and sociable but he was been hiding in his house for hours now and when gets annoyed when you touch him, his brother burrito cuddles up to him with his head on the side of burts belly, could someone please suggest what could be going on and what I could do I have so worried the boys are only just going to be one in October, I’m going to take Burt to the vets but in the mean time what could I do and what could this be

It sounds like it could be a uri which if left can be deadly. Please see a vet today and let us know how you get on.

I have just notice Burt has black little specs in his fur I have looked online and it seems to be telling me it could be mites, I think it’s from the hay I brought from pets at home as my Guinea pigs live at home and there’s no any other way they could of got some , but I have a vets appointment later on just to be on the safe side so I know what it is for sure

Just been at the vets had both of the boys check over, had their fur tested as well and they have lice the vet has said they are like mites have to have injections every 2 weeks which are costing me a fortune! But anything for my little boys I also have to take my 2 little girls later on today to get them injected as well, does anyone else know what I could do to help them get better and get rid of the black specks on their fur

@Milla Let the treatment get to work, and it may clear up itself. If not, ask the vet next time you're there to see when you're able to bath them.

I’m taking my little girls later on today for the injections as well so I will ask when I can bath them

Poor piggies.
Hope it all clears up quickly.
This is a good reminder why we all need our vet funds.
Hope you’re bearing up too - it’s worrying when our darlings are not well

The boys were allowed a bath because they had injections but the girls weren’t because they had drops, I cleaned both of there cages out and gave them a proper clean down now the piggies seem to be feeling a lot better finally out of there house eating away. Burts still a bit weak but hopefully within time he will be a lot better soon. We are back in 2 weeks at vets for more injections and drops to be on the safe side that the mites are gone

Burt still seems to be struggling to breath he is still making weird noises like he’s wheezing but when I went to the vets yesterday they said his heart beat is just a little fast but breathing is fine but it doesn’t seem it to me

Burt passed away yesterday I am absolutely heartbroken he wasn’t even 1 year old, the vets didn’t listen to anything I said and said he was just fine it’s just the mites

So sorry for your loss.
It’s so hard when you have done everything possible for your piggy.
Allow yourself time to grieve and be gentle with yourself.
