Can the lower incisors get too long so that they cant grab their food? Hectors lower incisors looked real long tonight and Ive just given them some veg and he doesnt want it and it looks as if hes having trouble grabbing the food with his teeth

Hope Hector is OK. I guess their teeth can get too long if they are mis-aligned and also if they're not getting ground down by chewing on hay and grass. How has Hector been in the past? Has he been happy chewing on his hay?

he doesnt seem to want to eat anything. he want to eat some veg before but looks as if he cant grab it

Hes eating some of his pellets but hes opening his mouth every so often

So anyone know a good vet in the east anglia area who is good with guinea pig teeth?

I would take him to a vet

My friend lost one of her pigs about 3 months ago suddenly.

The other one stopped eating for a while and then went off his food. He then started eating a bit then just stopped for a week.

They took him to a vet and the vet said he done himself no favours by not eating because he missed his piggy mate.

The xray showed up that his teeth had grown right through parts of his tongue and he could not open his mouth.

The piggy had to be operated on straight away. My friend was frantic

Hope your piggy is ok / I am thinking about him like many others on this site

From the sounds of things I also feel a dental check is in order.

Incisor overgrowth is most often secondary to molar overgrowth i.e. the incisors do not meet correctly because the molars are overgrown. Nothing should be done with the incisors without the molars being examined. No anaesthetic needed for this, and most dental work can be done without anaesthetic too.

I *think* there is a rodentologist in Norfolk somewhere. Maybe worth sending a PM to sophiew to ask, as I know they helped her with a dental pig?

Sophiew has seen my other post asking about any rodentologists in the east anglia area but she just said that she goes to the CCT .. I'ev also sent her a PM

Yes, I go to CCT but for dental work I go to friends of Vedra's in Ipswich, as I am a CCT member they treat my piggies for free. It's still quite a drive but they're very good. I don't know if they would see non CCT members though, or whether they only see people on behalf of Vedra.

Teresa has a good vet but I don't know if they do dentals

Ive given him some mashed up pellets with baby food tonight (which he hated) had to get my OH to hold him as he was wiggling so much. He's also got a bit of diarrhoea so I mashed up a fresh dropping from one of the others and gave that to him (which he hated)

I'm still pretty sure its his teeth, he was ripping at some tissue before (that i was using to wipe his mouth) and he was struggling to chew that unless I held it and he ripped some little bits off

Hes still eating some of his hard food but I havent seen him eating hay

I'm going to book him into a vets in Ipswich on Saturday that seem to specialise in small animal surgery so I'm hoping they'll be good with dentalwork - i havent got no other choice really and i cant leave him for much longer.

Would you be able to find out who Teresa uses? x

Oh no, sorry to hear about poor Hector...hopefully your vet will be able to help him out. Thinking of you two! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I gave Hector some more mashed pellets this morning - I weighed him too and he doesnt seem to have dropped any which is good. He didnt seem to have any diarrhoea so that poop soup must of helped.

Hes booked in the vets at 9am on saturday so I'll keep hand feeding him up until Saturday morning

He is still eating some of his gerty which is good and I have some science selective that I have been using to mash

Well done with everything you're doing so far, you are doing good. xx
