Hi guys, i have just found the cutest little hedghog outside, the dogs were barking at it grrr, anyway, i just wondered if i should put some food out for it, and if so what?

Thanks x

Dog food is good, but encourages vermin. I put out a mixture of lard and oats for the birds and the hedgehogs also eat it.

Hedgehogs should be fattening up about now, they shouldn't be too small and need to get nice a fat before starting to sleep. If you do put out food then put it underneath a big box, weighted down, with only a small entrance so that a cat can't get in or reach in and the hedgehog is safe when eating. If this is simply too hard to sort out tonight then do try tomorrow as your hedgehog may be simply looking for new territory.

I have hedgehogs visiting the garden plus a hedgehog home at the bottom that we made from a old drawer with an entrance cut into it, a wooden floor underneath it and a lot of rotting wood piled over the top. It works.

Best of luck. Although wild and rarely seen, hedghogs are fab. You can tell if your hedgehog is still around by the poo - it is black, sticky, about half inch by two to three inches long and they simply leave it behind as they walk along so it's likely to be somewhere obvious.

Is it safe with your dogs around? If it is, then I'd put some dog food out for it. I'm so jealous you have a hedgehog :)

wow, thanks for all that!

OK, ive just been out and its gone i cant see it :( i feel terrible.

Its so dark and i cant see anything, so i will have to have a look in the morning, i have a pile of logs in the garden with lots of long grass round it for the all the birds to hide in, so hopefully it will find its way there, as there are loads of cats round here :...

Tomorrow, i will put some food out, and a drink and a safe home for it, i have a big garden so it can stay there. Will random hedgehogs go together in it?

I think the dogs were ok with it, they just barked and probably scared it, i think they were a bit spooked really!

Thank you so much everyone, i am sooo excited now, hope its there tomos x

x)

You can give it cat/dog puppy/kitten food (biscuits or wet) & water to drink or you can buy hedgehog food from tesco :)

Have a look here http://www.thehedgehog.co.uk/diet.htm

This site is brilliant thanks for the link.

Also, i have an old guinea pig hutch that my dad once built for my garden that looks just like the one shown on this site, so tomorrow I'm going to set it up, wooo hooooo, sooo excited :(|)

This is all brilliant thanks, I'm going to set up a house for it tomorrow. I must be really lucky you know, ive had a few hedgehogs over the years, now i know what to do I'm going to keep them as long as i can ;)

thanks again x

great thread, I've just been thinking about the hedgehog we had last year. Must start feeding it again properly. i did actually start a few weeks ago, but it attracted all the local kitties . . . . . and now we own a 3rd cat ")

The link shows a DIY hedgehog feeding hide that is cat proof, so gonna work on that.

Ive put a cage out tonight that was my first outdoor cage my dad built for me, so ive decided to donate it to any hedgehog that wants to frequent my lil garden! ooooooooh fingers crossed, i cant wait, i also put out some complete dog food that i put a little gravy on, and some water, do you think thats ok??

The hedgehog site says dog and cat food is fine - wet and dry, as long as its not fish flavoured.

Sultanas, raisins, and peanuts all good too.

Been reading through it a lot tonight - talked o/h into making a hog hide tomorrow :))

Def!

our dog found ours last year - woofed and did his best big scary dog impression. He is a cavilier king charles spaniel - even the hedgehog thought he looked silly. He kept coming back for food, and gave the dog fleas a few times :(. It was amazing to watch him, but the fleas are the only downside. Must look up how to treat fleas in hedgehogs, has to be worse for them then for my spoilt dog.

ha ha oh bless, my two (whippet & whippet x) both tensed their muscles and played big dogs, then ran inside when it moved!!

Yeah, fleas......bummer, but as you say, only downside!

he he x

We found an ill hedgehog in our garden a couple of years ago, we took her to the vets & eventually found a hog rescue where she made a full recovery & was eventually released.
The lady there told me hedgehogs rarely have fleas now, hedgehog fleas are orange in colour & seem to be almost extinct but if you do find fleas on one they are likely to be cat/dog fleas :)

This is Henrietta Hog, she lived in our kitchen for 2 nights until we took her to the rescue. She was beautiful but oh my did she honk :))

That is a custard cream & i was told by the lady who used to run a local hedgehog rescue (who i woke from her bed at 1am) that hogs who may not have an appetite can't resist them; she was right.

oh my god...so cute....I'm jealous.....my little visitor didnt come back last night :(

They are lovely arent they, its like having another piggy x
