For the first time since I have her, I am traveling for 5 days and Penny, my sweet guinea, will be boarding at the vets for what will end up being six days. I am assured she is in knowledgeable hands and will be safe.
I am worried that she will not get floor time and have the freedom to play she has at home. I am just looking for words of support and others stories about leaving their piggies for a period of time. Has anyone had any experiences to share? The only other option for Penny was a pet sitter who comes to the house for 30 minutes a day - I said NO, not enough time at all for my girl. Thank you. Colleen

Penny will be fine.
Five days is a relatively short period of time, and while she might not have as much fuss and play time as usual, she will be ok.

You have done the right thing arranging for her to be cared for by professionals.

We have a house sitter when we go away and this means the guinea pigs don't get floor time or daily cuddles like they do when we are here, but they have always been ok with it.
The longest they have been left is around 20 days (with daily pet sitter visits of course) and they have always been fine.

Swiss Greys, I appreciate your reply very much. Yes, in it will be a short time away. As a new piggie mom I was concerned.
You have put me at ease and I am grateful you took the time to respond. Thank you.

I agree with what Swissgreys has said. I regularly leave my piggies for 4 or 5 days while I visit my daughter. Whilst they are at home with my partner they don't get the same routine or floor time as he doesn't have the time to supervise them like I do. They seem to like the change in routine, and they definitely like the extra treats they get to make up for not having as much time spent on them! You are leaving her somewhere where she will be well looked after so try not to worry too much.

I went to the vet I was considering boarding Penny at today. The boarding room/ facility is basically a large closet, no windows, with cages on top of each other. I am not at all happy about leaving her there for any amount of time longer than a day. Next week I am going to visit Crazy Cavies, a rescue that also boards. Hope that they are more considerate to the animals. If not there is one more exotic vet I can check out. I wish I had someone to come to our place and spend quality time with Penny at home while I am gone. : (

Oh that’s a shame the original vets turned out to not be suitable, I don’t blame you!
The guinea pig rescue place sounds ideal! Hey maybe you can even find her a friend there 😄
