Hi all,

When we first got Aspen we noticed a lump on her back end that the vet confirmed was a sebaceous cyst - here's a photo.

That was about 3 weeks ago- and the vet said leave it be and keep an eye on it.

When we checked last night we noticed it looked like this

Hopefully you can see the white bit that's formed in the middle. We are going
To the vet on Monday but is there anything I can do in the meantime?

She doesn't seem bothered but it's a bit warm

Thanks all x x x x

I would just keep an eye on it for now, looks like it may need draining though. If it does burst you may need to get to the vets sooner. Have you got any Hibiscrub? You could keep it clean with that maybe.

I would book Aspen in to have it removed. I've experienced sebaceous cysts with 2 of mine. The first was in the summer of 2012 with Mousey & the vet said wait & see but it did get bigger & it was successfully removed in October the same year. Then last year I was fostering Rex who was booked in to be neutered. He had a cyst & it burst on the eve of his neutering op. I bathed it & he had it completely removed the next morning when he was neutered. I eventually adopted him & he never went back to the rescue & is now living happily with 2 abi wives.

Thanks guys for putting my mind at rest!

I think the vet will prob offer to remove it- he mentioned it last time. Poor we scone - she's had a rubbish start in life.

My neutered boar Mali keeps sniffing it- strange as it doesn't smell of anything to me and my hubby.

I'm glad you've not told me to give it a squeeze to get the gunk out!

I think they know when somethings not right with another pig. When my lacey had an absess in her neck her little friend Aby started eating her hair around the area, it was a big help as it helpt me notice it getting larger after her op so I took her back for more antibiotics. They are quite helpful little things! She's atopped now laceys all better and has moved onto side and bottom trims lol!

Hi all- just to update you.

Aspen is booked on to have her cyst removed on Thursday.

It's the right thing to do as it is getting bigger and infected. He is experienced with Guinea pigs and I was happy to know that as soon as Aspen wakes up the vet nurses will get on with syringe feeding her to get her guts moving.

It's just horrible when the vet said the anaesthetic risks are about 1 in 100. Thursday is also a year to the day that I lost my Grandad so all being well the 1st May will have a nicer meaning in future x

Wishing her lots of luck with her upcoming surgery! Linney, one of my pigs, had a very similar situation a few years back (cyst on her lower back which became infected/abscessed and had to be surgically removed after drainage failed to resolve it.) I was stressed out, but she did very well and almost 3 years later you would never know she had it done. I hope your pig has similar great results!

Aww thank you.

Its nice to hear happy outcomes. As we have only got her a just over a month ago, so she has just started to trust me. I hope that doesn't change after tomorrow.

I think she'll think I'm a big bad Mum but its for her own good!

She'll forgive you! One of my pigs, Sundae, has had a ton of medical issues... she is on regular antibiotics, which she hates, and she had a huge abscess alone her jawline, which I had to squeeze out and irrigate for months while it healed, and she still likes me. Being the person who gives treats cancels out a multitude of medical treatments, apparently!
