Echo is ill again. This time immediate symptoms look like bloat. No er vet till morning. Syringing water with probiotic, also cc. Won't take hay. Massaging gently, don't have any vibrating pad. Breathing very shallow now, very floppy. Has passed some stool's. Also out of desperation have given 0.4ml nurofen. What else can I do for her please?

Keep going with the massage, do you have an electric toothbrush?

I am concerned that she is floppy though, is there an emergency vet you can call?

No! I know a lot of people like to massage, but if their is a blockage it can make it rupture. :( - the electric toothbrush idea is better.

Continue massaging, floppyness is concerning. Do you have the number of an emergency vet?

Stopped massaging now, eyes watering, front legs gone stiff and just done a big contortion round trying to bite her feet and legs. Breathing coming in gasps now, think I may be too late. How can I try the electric toothbrush? what do I do?

To be honest I don't think it would help that this stage, if she is struggling to breathe it is an emergency and she needs the vets.

Where are you located? I will search for the number for you.

If you phone your normal vet they should have details of emergency vet on answerphone

Hello everyone. May I thank you all for your help and advice with Echo. I tried to set off to emergency vets but unfortunately she took a turn for the worse, having a massive contortion and twisting herself right over her back and biting hold of her own back leg, which was very distressing to see. It took me a good half minute to get her to let go and when she did she was writhing around so much that I just held her till she went. I had read to massage on a link somewhere, wish now I had got to you lot first but even then I know she needed professional help more than anything and I wasn't given the time to get her there. Rest in peace, my little Echo. You now graze freely with my other little poppets. Jasmine, Erin, Kara, Martha the matriarch, Rose, Orla and lastly Ewan, only two weeks ago. Not having a good month. Five out of ten of my cavy family ill, two lost. Please hope my bad luck has ended now and the others stabilise and prosper for a long time. Thank you again everyone, a lesson learned the hardest way how to deal with bloat, the biggest factor needed is time. Signing off now, rather depleted, tissue box empty.

I am so sorry :( It sounds like a gut torsion, I lost my Poppy to that 4 years ago & unfortunately it is nearly always fatal. You did all you could. Run free little Echo.

I'm so sorry, I agree it sounds like gut torsion and the foot biting would have been a pain response.

Night night little Echo.

I am so sorry, huge hugs x

Sleep well little one

RIP Echo

I'm very sorry for your sad loss especially in distressing circumstances like this. R.I.P. Echo. xx

Thank you everyone for your kind messages. This is a wonderful site and I wish I had been on line at the very start of our family having Cavies again, the last 6 years sharing antics and such and information would have been tremendous.

I joined in similar circumstances to you. I had a poorly piggy & was looking for answers but unfortunately I was also too late. I've learned lots & had lots of help on here since & because of this I saved Minky who was in a really bad way last year but managed to nurse her back to health with lots of help on here. I hope that when the pain eases that you will continue with guinea pigs because they become such a big part of our lives.

Oh you bet! Had guinea's on and off through my life then started again with my children. I absolutely adore them. Things have moved on so much in their care and housing and knowledgeable people like the good folk on here! I must say though, that in my childhood, I never had any of the health issues they all seem up against these days!

Awwww I'm so sorry to hear about poor Echo! Sounds like you did all you could do. See you on the other side Echo. Look for our peanut. I know he's a gerbil but he's SUPER nice! Xoxoxo

I am a new pig mom and can't imagine. Even with a vet tech degree, I don't know much at all about guinea pigs expect what I have learned here. I would be at a loss as what to do in an emergency. Trying to learn all I can. I'm lucky in a sense We do have 24 hour emergency clinics near me and a few specialize in exotics.

So sorry to hear about Echo. It's heartbreaking to lose a piggie under any circumstances. If it was gut torsion, it's unlikely there would have been anything the vet could have done anyway. RIP Echo. x
