I currently have two female american short haired guinea pigs. They are still quite young, approx 5 months. Very very different in personality from one another. One is outgoing, curious and friendly (very vocal) and the other is reserved and very laid back (hardly makes a peep). The one that is outgoing is looking for companionship that the shy one is not dishing out. The outgoing one gets snapped at when she tries to cuddle up to the shy one. Anyways I am planning to add a third pig and I'm debating about whether to go with a silkie or an abby that I've found. The silkie is a bit older, about the same age as the two I have currently. She seems pretty laid back from my first encounters with her. The abby is younger and I can't really gage her personality yet. I would say she's quite young, maybe only 2-3 months. Definitely younger than the pigs I have currently. Any thoughts? main goals are to hopefully get a companion that my current piggy is looking for and secondly to get another guinea pig that will enjoy being pet/handled (of course with supervision and guidance) by my children. Any thoughts are appreciated. I have a 4 by 2 C&C cage with loft for reference. The base is about 10.5 sq feet and then the second level is in addition to that.

Hi! You’ll need a bigger C&C cage if you’re thinking of adding a new pig, I think the minimum is 2x5 but a 2x6 would be even better! :)

Silkies will need haircuts and regular grooming so it’s definitely worth doing a bit of research into the breed like you’re doing now! :)

I’m sure someone will be along shortly with more info on trios and long haired breeds!

Abysinian are a good breed to go for , they do not need grooming, but yet look quite funky. I sometimes groom my boar though. He just likes it
