HI, Dot has started scratching out of control and crying, His fur is now fallig out in clumps around one ear and I have started to notice red blotches on his back. Anyone can you help? 8...
Please get him to a vet - sounds like a mite infection (although could be fungal)...and in view of his incessant scratching - it can only get worse if left untreated by a vet
I would hope the vet will give him ivermectin (or similar injections) every two weeks for at least 2 or 3 doses and possibly also an antifungal (griseofulvin oral antibioitic)
It would also be worth bathing him in an appropriate shampoo and drying him carefully to ensure he doesn;t get cold. Gorgeous guineas and Johnsons insecticidal shampoo are two good ones that work for me
Once he's clear - you can get something like Xeno450 spot on topical treatment to preventatively treat him every 3-4 months so you don;t get a recurrence.
Also please while this first lot of treatment is going on, keep him somewhere spearate for a couple of weeks (indoors in a box?) and clean and disinfect his cage and all accessories to prevent reinfection. I use Johnsons insceticidal spray coupled with bleach but leave the cage for a couple of weeks to air/biodegrade before putting the piggies back in
My advice is comprehensive and a lot of fuss...and perhaps cuold be considered a bit OTT - but hopefully (as a microbiologist familiar with secondary spread and reinfection) it is designed to minimise the probability of a recurrence (and it's certainly worked for me with my herd on minimising/eliminating both mite and fungal infections)
All the above advice is great from Pebble. I notice that you're in Ontario so the drugs they give over there may be different. Anyone else know?
Have a read around on the forum about mites / fungal and how to give a bath. Aloe vera gel is good for soothing the skin and you should be able to get it quickly from a drugstore.
Please take Dot to the vets asap and give them the information here if they aren't guinea savvy.
Sorry to hear that Dot is in so much discomfort - it sounds very distressing and painful. I agree that he definitely needs Vet treatment asap as it sounds quite advanced and won't clear up without meds. It's important to get a correct diagnosis and obviously he needs to be examined in order to do this properly.
Here's a link to the US-based website Guinea Lynx. Obviously you're very welcome here, but GL also has a forum with a lot more US/Canadian members than here, if you're at all concerned about recommended products available where you are: http://www.guinealynx.info/mites.html
Hope you can get Dot seen soon, so he can get better quickly.
