help for me rabbit.... need someone do teeth with out GA?

hi all, i adopted a female rabbit (spayed) from a local rabbit rescue to go with my neutered boy rabbit, well when i had her i noticed her eye looked a little sore, i have had her 10 days now and her eyes have got really really bad white stringy discharge, i have been cleaning her eyes every day and putting brolen drops in them, like ive always done with rescue guineas that have eye trouble..

but it wasnt clearing so ive been the vets this morning and the vet has given me some eye drops fucidin drops, and have been told to put her on baytril 0.4ml twice a day for a week, then she needs to go back as the vet looked at her teeth and found one of the front teeth wasnt growning right and the back teeth has a few spurrs on them..

they have said she needs to go back next week, to have a GA to do her teeth and flush her tear ducts out if things dont improve after they will removed the front teeth..

what i need to know is! when it comes to guinea pigs my guinea friend does their teeth for me with out GA.but is there anyone or even poss that can do rabbits back teeth with out GA or do they always need a GA..

I CAN TRAVEL WITH IN REASON i live in stoke on trent staffordshire, and my friend in guinea teeth is in stratford, but cant do rabbit teeth (only trim the front)

really could do with some help!

sorry to hear about your bunny....my Angel has just had the same problem...£75 for the surgery........I think that it would be too stressful for the rabbit not to be ''knocked out'' and the flushing of the tear ducts would be very hard without the bunny being asleep!
 
It sounds like you need a good rabbit vet. Baytril is a pretty outdated drug these days, my vet hasn't used it since 2002 as there are far more effective options.

It seems strange that they would want to remove the front teeth. Usually the back teeth are bad (spurrs etc) and this causes uneven ware so the front teeth grow odd. It's not the front teeth that are the issue, they are just the secondary problem. The spurs need a dental.

Is it the spurs that are causing the eye trouble or is that a separate thing?

One of the best rabbit vets in the country is Molly Varga and she's at Cheshire Pets, I use Ashleigh Vets, Manchester where she used to practice and Aidan is fantastic. Both are exotic specialists and do referrals. I trust their opinion more than anyone.

Just read the advice from the other forum.

In regards to pellets although they are okay as a treat (egg cup) they aren't needed. With a dental bun I would stop feeding them altogether, they aren't doing her any good, lets put it that way. It's possible to get the teeth right with a good diet of hay, greens and no pellets and a few dentals but it really depends on how bad the teeth are.

She deffo needs a dental, she could well go into stasis if the pain worsens (which it will with spurs).

Sadly, every week we see rabbits that are beyond help in regards to teeth. They would have to have dentals every few weeks to keep them going and it's just not fair on them.

I hope you find a good vet to sort this for you, it really worries me what your current vet has suggested. Feel free to pm me if you need any other help.
 
Conscious dentals in bunnies is a bit controversal. Several of the vets on RU pointed out that you get a much more through job done if its under GA, its quite stressful and because rabbits have such sensitive structures in their mouth it can actually be quite risky - one slip and bunny could bleed to death.

However there are lots who support it and have bunnies who have them regularly who wouldn't be alive if it wasn't availible.

You'll **** need to shop around to find a vet that will do them.

We to use Aidan and Molly at Ashleigh Vets and wouldnt trust anybody else with our 2 lovely buns. They have a website take a look, you wont regret it. :)
 
Personally, unless it was very necessary, I'd always have an unconscious dental carried out in a rabbit (for reasons already stated in another post).
