Help! fungus? mites? wrong medicine?

Hi, all! I bought 7 week old piggie-pup a week ago. he had initially some bold tiny patch around his eye, wich we noticed on day 3, later it developed to a bigger one with crust on and we took him back to PetsatHome store from where we brought him, and they gave us "spot on " medicine, confirming that these are mites. BUT! after applying it Fluffy gone completely mad! he's jumping, squiking(from discomfort or so), biting, gnawing and chewing absolutely everything!scratching himself and just going completely nuts!
was it wrong medicine?(he didn't behaive like that before)
while doing research on internet..found out about fungus ! mallethead it does look like it...according to pictures from net...but same it looks as mites damage what is it? I'm confused!:{ I ve read about diffrent creams and lotions for fungus( are they actualy treating or just soothing?) and anti-mite shampoos..bla bla bla.. but what really works? can anybody tell me PLEASE? PLEASE?
And SOS Fluff stopped drinking water! is it serious?

People on here are a lot more knowledgeable than me, but often eye area baldness is one sign of a fungal type infection. What was the spot on medicine that they gave you? Did any of it actually go into your piggy's eye by accident and make him go mad? Treatment for a fungal infection is different to treatment for mites, both normally given under veterinary supervision, with additional bathing in some cases. Do you have any photos you could put up? You really need a definite diagnosis. xxxxx

It sounds a bit like ringworm, which is highly contagious and seems to affect lots of shop bought piggies.

I would recommend that you'd better had him seen by a proper vet (not the store vet!) as soon as possible. It won't cost the world, but the faster you sort it out the better! Don't try p@h again - we've had some bad stories about them taking the piggy back "for treatment" (and as far as I know never to be heard of again) - which was NOT what the people in question had wanted!

If you have other guinea pigs you need to keep the new arrival apart from them (best in another room) and treat him with gloves, as you can get ringworm yourself. Feed and clean him last.

Hopefully, you will love your new little one enough to give him good care!

Vets, are a good place to go to, but one of our 4 boys had scaly skin round his ears and the vets thought it was mites. they were lovely at the vets but unfortunately it still hasn't gone. so now i'm trying tea tree cream from p@h, i'm hoping it works if anyone has another suggestion that would be great.
Also has anyone used the beaphar spot on t/ment for piggies with ivermectin in it and what do you think. Looking for advice, thanks.

she specialises in guineas skin complaints and is also a rodentologist. If you email her via her site, she will advise which of her products to use. It really sounds like a fungal infection, ringworm is one type. Make sure you tell her the age too as some may be unsuitable for younger piggies.

I wouldn't think teatree cream would do a great deal - if its ringworm/fungal they need antifungal shampoo or a POM if its bad, if its mites they need ivomec (like zeno the vets also provide) not sure how good the P@H spot on is for treating mites as its marketed as a preventative. Unfortunately lots of vets aren't too good at recognising which is which in piggies, its best to find a vet who you know treats Guineas often. I found my vet by contacting a local rescue to see who they used.

Sorry I don't really know any more or what you pig has. Maybe send a pic to gorgeousguineas the site owner is very helpful!?!

If his skin is very sore, the topical "spot-on" treatment may have stung a bit. To me, it seems more likely to be fungal based on where the problem began. Mites typically affect the body and rump more than the face, while fungal commonly begins on the face.

I second all the suggestions for www.gorgeousguineas.com - whether it is parasitic or fungal (but particularly if it is fungal) they have something or can recommend a good treatment. I advise treating for both problems in any case, as the two can often be present at the same time.

Ivermectin is used to treat mites, I prefer to give it orally but topical solutions are fine if the skin isn't too severely affected. An antifungal shampoo, such as the Manuka and Neem from Gorgeous Guineas, will deal with a fungal problem, and the Galen's Garden Green Cream/Lavender and Myrrh (both lotions from Gorgeous Guineas) treat skin problems on the face well.

Ringworm, a particular type of fungal infection, would need to be confirmed by a vet. I do recommend seeing a guinea pig experienced vet to get some further advice if you are at all unsure of treating yourself/what you are treating.

But it's worth day -by-day situation... this morning I took him out of cage...and 8...8...8... my god, the under eye spot was bleeding, I suppouse he scratched it so badly? I'm completely unexpierencied with guinea pigs, and I never expected to have so big problem and worry in very first week . We love Fluffy already, and don't want change him or something, just want to treat ASAP! Checking vets in yellow pages....{:| oh.. stress:(
Did anyone had similar problem?

Poor chap, looks like it has really been irritating him. It is fairly common for piggies to scratch themselves until they have bleeding lesions. Soak some gauze/cotton wool pads in some salt water (made with cooled boiled water) and gently clean the area.

Whereabouts are you, in UK? If so we may be able to recommend a vet to you. You could also - if in UK - contact Vedra at the Cambridge Cavy Trust for advice on a good vet or rodentologist near you. Number is 07721 026401

Have you had a look on the sticky thread "recommended vets" at the top of the health/illness section"?

You could also ring your closest rescue and ask them which vet they're using?

Or is there a PDSA clinic within reach? A normal vet centre should do for emergencies!
