My 6 year old short haired albino Guinea pig Dexter was 100% ok just 2 DAYS AGO! I took him out to give him some carrots when i noticed his right eye was 20%smaller than the other one.I showed my mom (don't think i'm a baby) I then called the vet they said "so you can bring him in tonight for 200$ or you can wait 2 days and bring him in for 30$" i wanted to bring him in that night but he was acting like himself and maybe that is why i didn't notice his eye until i went to give him a treat. It just makes me so sad to think that he could have had that for 2-3 days without me knowing. I want him to be ok so if you are religious PLEASE pray for him if not can you please post a solution. thank you have a wonderful day.

Is it possible to post a picture? It could be that a bit of hay is in his eye which needs to be removed asap to prevent it worsening and prevent blindness. Sometimes they get it out themselves. Are you taking him to the vet? It's good you caught it quickly. Try not to worry.

Sounds like hay poke as Jesse said. My piggies get it quite frequently. Is there a cloudy bit in his eye? That's how I notice. Christian had a bit of hay in his eye that I didn't want to remove last time as it was only the little seedy bits at the top of the stalk so the vet did it for me. He is still on antibiotic eyedrops until I take him back to the vet tomorrow. If the vet gives you eye drops you'll be shown how to put them in. I find it easier to wrap up a wriggly piggie tightly in a towel then it gives you two hands to put the drops in! Christian first had a bad eye at 7 days old and that was fun trying to put in two lots of eye drops when he was only the length of my hand long!

Eye injuries are quite common in guinea pigs. Ideally they should be seen as soon as you notice as they can deteriorate quite quickly; it seen promptly and unless the damage is too strong, they thankfully heal fairly straight forward, too. But I understand your problem. Please make sure that you can get an appointment as soon as the price has come down.

Have a look at the eye to see whether you can see some hay poking out from under a lid. If you feed stalky timothy hay, a scratch or poke is also very likely. If you start seeing a white/light blue film developing on the eye, that is an eye ulcer.

Can you get visco tear liquid gel from a pharmacy to keep the eye hydrated while you wait and put a little bit on the eye 2-3 times a day. That is simply additional eye fluid; just don't say that it is for a guinea pig. The gel works more slowly and for longer than the drops.

Glad you like the forum. Any other problems and just for a chat come back anytime. We all like helping other people with piggie problems.
