Help! His Eye Looks Funny!?

I looked into my piggie cage and noticed my babies eye looked really weird like it was rolled back almost!? The whites of his eye were showing and there’s a little bit of milky discharge?

His right eye looks to be protruding, no discharge from that side though, nor any pain or discomfort from what I can tell. After I picked him up it kind of went away but still sticks out a bit further than the other one... maybe could’ve he gotten poked in the eye? He was clearly squinting it this pic because I was bugging him for this picture, and I checked him out and looks like a piece of his hair was poking into his eye so I brushed it out... I can’t afford anymore sick piggies oi!

Hm. I feel kind of silly. After my Melvin died because I didn’t do everything properly, I’ve been kind of a hypochondriac... every little thing and I jump on here and start researching if he needs vets and medications! Which is fine, but in this case I think he was cleaning his eye...
I have never seen the milky fluid they clean their eyes with, and I just found a picture of it that appeared VERY similar to what I was seeing, however I thought it was the whites of his eyes... although now there’s milky fluid under his eye... so I am assuming it dripped down... but only one eye was this way, do they clean both at the same time? Oof, I think I’m getting a little carried away and stressed about my babes too much.

Don't panic! Tom (my son) notice a white discharge in the corner of Dennis's eye last night and went into panic mode too! I had a look and said that I thought it was cleaning fluid (I found a picture and showed it to him) and he wasn't sure. This morning his eye is fine.

Do you save a bit each month into a piggy fund? A lot of people on here do then it is there for when you need to take your pig to the vet and you don't need to worry quite so much that you have to take out a mortgage for your vets fees!

I haven’t but have been thinking about starting one soon! Being in the city the vet funds are ridiculous! I wouldn’t panic so quick and run online if I didn’t have to pay $70 for just a vet to LOOK at him! Otherwise I’d happily take them there whenever I felt a problem coming on. It was just so strange, I walked in and my Milton was staring at me and it looked like one of his eyes was almost stuck rolled up, like the whites of his eye was showing, scared me so badly! Now that I’m thinking clearly and not panicking I’m thinking it’s definitely just cleaning fluid... phew.

Most piggy owners know the experience.
$70 just to see a vet is expensive so regular saving is a good idea.

Hi! Please keep an eye on his left eye; if he continues squiting/retracting it, he may have an injury or something stuck under his eyelid that could cause an ulceration.

Many people overlook that vet cost will usually make the largest part of the any pets living cost. It is important that you budget for them right from the start and that you include saving up for a vet fund on a weekly basis as part of the normal running cost right from the start; especially in a country with high vet cost like yours where a life saving operation can easily cost $400-1000.

I agree, I’m watching out for his little eye, He seems to be fine today, but I’ll watch it for the week and see if it looks strange or retracts again. And about the fund I absolutely agree, a savings is in order, I’ll have to make a trip to the bank to set one up for my little babies

Well, I’m calling the vet now, I’ve checked him out further and his eye is a bit cloudy and watery, poor babe. Must’ve poked himself with hay? Hm.

Update: Milton had a scratch on his eye, but it did not get the pupil! He’s on antibiotic eye drops 3 times a day now, and I am going to get him checked up on in 3 days to see how we’re healing. Milton seemed so scared in the vet, poor guy never leaves his house! I picked him up and he snuggled right into me. He’s happy to be back in the car in hiding, I can hear him ferociously munching away on hay right now, silly boy.

Will he flush his eye out more that it’s hurt? I notice more milky discharge well up in his eyes, then he’ll blink and rub it about, but not with his other one.

Dennis doesn't like the "nasty vet man" either! I always take a piggy friend whenever one of mine has to go to the vets. Dennis is the most scared though and as soon as he sees the vet he does a swift 180, runs up my body onto my shoulder and cowers under my hair. Bless him! I always try to get Rachel to see Dennis as he is slightly less scared of her as she is very good with gps. She had them when she was little and when she did her vet training. I could tell the first time one of my gps saw her that she was used to handling them and was very confident with them. You recognise a fellow gp slave when you see one!

I don’t think any piggy really likes the vet.
Last time I took Merab who is the most amazingly placid and relaxed guinea pig she threw a temper tantrum as soon as Vet Kiri began to check her.
