I very stupidly dropped my guinea piggie Nigel yesterday. I lifted him from his cage (which is kept on the dining table) and he fell on to the table. It was only about a foot - two foot drop. But anyway I checked him over and he was still squeaking quite happily. I only noticed that he seemed to not be able to eat his favourite food cucumber properly so I looked at his mouth. I think he may have chipped a bit of his front tooth. I kept my eye on him and on his eating thinking if he had a sort mouth it would just need to calm down.

Today I was feeding his cucumber which I sliced thinly to help him eat and I had a closer look. His front tooth looked wobbly. However he does seem to be eating his pellets and his hay and have been grating his other favourite thing carrot.

What does this mean? Will they settle down? What would a vet do?

Nigel is not in any pain or discomfort and still happily squeaks away when being cuddled.

Help!

I feel terribly guilty.

Don't feel guilty, accidents happen. Guinea pigs teeth grow continually so if it falls out it won't be permanent. Meanwhile you may have to mash up his food for him if he can't manage it himself - I'm sure someone with more experience with piggie teeth will be along in a mo and give you some advice, meanwhile try to stop worrying And as is always the case: if in doubt: make an appt. with an exotic vet :)

If a piggy cannot eat, it can be quite serious, so try to leave a bowl of mashed up pellets in the cage for him to eat if nothing else, and take him to see a vet. :) But as said above, dont worry, accidents happen! I'm sure if he gets vet treatment he will be fine.

Thank you for your help and advice. I will mash up his pellets just to help him. He is still eating so am not worried bout that I'll just make sure I make it as easy as I can for him.

I've got the buns myxi jabs on Monday so might take him along,

Thank you again x

Yes, try not to worry too much if he is eating by himself.

Quite soon after I got Paddy he ran into a wall during floor time (mallethead) and completely broke off his top incisors. He was eating absolutely fine but I grated everything up like you're doing. I took him to the vet the next day and he said there should be no problem as long as he's eating. They grew back very quickly and he has lovely gnashers now!

But yes, as had been said if you're the slightest bit concerned it's better to pop to the vet :)

Oh love accidents do happen, they're such wriggly worms!
A little hint when picking Nigel up pop a small towel or blanket in his cage and then wrap him up in that before taking him out :)
As everyone has said their toofies grow constantly, just be careful if that one is loose, might be best to take him when you take your bun for the myxi injection, just for precautions.
Our boy used to break off his front toofies all the time, i'd grate everything, having the mushy pellets is good too. I used to also hand feed normal pellets by gently putting them in the side of his mouth that kept his back/molar toofies working like they should.

Aww don't feel guilty hun, accidents can happen. If Nigel is okay and eating normally I'm sure he will be fine, just keep an eye on him and check him over etc.

I'm sure he still loves his mummy very much :) x
