Could I ask everyone to support the RSPCA Walsall branch again on the circus issue. Some of you may remember when Bobby Roberts animal circus came to Walsall 2 years ago. We did demo's outside the venue every night and lobbyed the council to stop them being able to come back onto council land. It was a very successful campaign.

It was reported in the news in the last few days that Bobby Roberts have applied to rent some land at the Arboretum, Walsall, again this year. We obviously want to make our feelings on this issue known to the council again. Even though the council are putting forward the recommendation of refusing the application, as we all know strange things can happen and I don't want to leave it to chance that it may slip through unopposed.

I am therefore making a plea on behalf of all the imprisoned and expolited animals used in his circus, for you to write to the licensing department to show your support of refusing the application and why you are opposed to the circuses with animals.

Here are some links to stories about Bobby Roberts and contraversial Anne the elephant, http://www.captiveanimals.org/elephants/anne.htm http://www.captiveanimals.org/news/2007/retirement.html

If you want any information on circuses with animals, have a look here, http://www.captiveanimals.org/index.htm

You should address your concerns about Walsall council renting land to an animal circus to Tim Challans, Assistant Director - Leisure, Culture and Lifelong Learning, Walsall Council, 12th Floor, Tameway Tower, 48 Bridge Street, WALSALL, WS1 1JZ or you can email your thoughts to [email protected]

Thank you for taking time to support the animals, all help and support is appreciated.

My aunt said a circus shouldnt be running unless its got animals in it :P
Personally i think any use of animals in circuses is great to watch yet everyone dont no what some have to deal with after the shows over :-\

this is the statement on the Bobby Roberts Circus website about Anne the Elephant
Statement on Anne the Elephant

We are surprised and saddened by the current campaign to 'retire' our elephant Anne.

Anne is a member of our family and we have grown up together.

Our standards of animal husbandry are excellent, Anne gets the best possible veterinary care and is lovingly looked after 24/7.

Allegations made by the tabloid newspapers about Anne's health claiming she is in 'constant pain' are totally unfounded and completely untrue. We have a large amount of veterinary evidence which completely refutes this claim. Additionally, claims that Anne is still performing are entirely fictional. Anne is retired from the circus ring and has been for some time.

Arguments over the rights and wrongs of performing animals in the circus are not the issue in Anne’s case because she is here. Our opinion is that if Anne was taken away from her familiar surroundings, and the company of those she loves, she would quite simply pine away and die. It would be a most unkind separation which would be far more detrimental to her wellbeing than continuing the way of life which she has known for many, many years.

One of our veterinary surgeons who has treated the animals in Bobby’s care over many years , Michael Fielding, and is an expert in the zoo and circus fields completely endorses our views. He commented, “I have worked with Mr. Roberts and Anne for many years and animal welfare has always been of paramount importance in his circus. Anne has become habituated to the circus routine over many years and in my opinion there would be minimal benefit in moving her at this time in her life.

If she was taken away to join another group of elephants she would need to re-establish her place in the social order in her new environment which could be extremely stressful. She is an old animal requiring constant care and her arthritis means she will need repeated treatment which I am fully confident she will get in her current home. Therefore I believe Anne will be more content in her current environment than in any other place to which she could be moved and she should be allowed to live out what remains of her life in her familiar surroundings.â€

Sounds like a poor excuse for not letting her retire to be with others of her kind! :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

how can keeping an elephant basically caged up in a tiny space be a normal way for it to live? Makes me so angry. xx

I can't see why she can't be 'retired' to a zoo at least with other elephants so she can be somewhere warm and dry which would be better for her arthitis all that traveling in cold trailers and damp tents can't help?
GGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

its just a shame we cant lock him up in a cramped cold trailer. xx

We don't get them here in Liverpool and I thought they were banned!

They are barbaric, went out with the dark ages and can't believe that any decent human being would want to set foot in one! 98)
