Help seriour mice issues - not sure what to do now

Hi there,

We noticed about 3 weeks ago that we have mice in the flat (we are on the 2nd floor!) >:(

I have put traps down, both humane and those that electrocute them (kinder than the normal traps I think) but so far have not managed to catch a single one of them. I have tried all sorts of bait (chocolate, bread, jam, GP's food...)

The problem is that my piggies are kept in a C&C and so the mice just go in there for food. I know I have seen them! So they are clearly not interested in any other bait I put down.

They are also getting bigger and there seems to be more of them now, judging by the size and amount of droppings they leave behind :tickedoff:

My bf suggested we get a pest control in to try and nip it in the bud. I have just come of the phone with them and they have told me about this 10 week program they run.

Basically they put poison down. I didn't want to go down that route as I am worried that they will take the poison into the GPs cage :'(
The guy I just spoke to says that won't as mice eat the food where they find it?

So I am looking for people's opinion on this, do you think this is true? Do you have experience in getting rid of mice?
I want to get rid of them but obviously don't want to put the GPs at risk

When I had this problem I caught the mice asap with a humane mouse trap and took them 25 miles away to release them. They haven't been back yet. Like you I was deeply concerned that the mice might carry disease or injure the piggies, so I evicted the mice within hours.

Can you move the C & C temporarily to somewhere less accessible? (very hard with mice). Do you know anyone with a cat (I tried that - the cats took one look at the piggies and legged it, tails streaming out behind in their haste!)

I have had traps down for about 3 weeks now and still haven't caught anything!
No I don't know anyone with a cat unfortunately.
 
We use poison and tbh it may be cruel but they do so much damage and we were told by the rat man that if you have mice it wont be long before its rats and he was right we had rats coming into the front bedroom upstairs they climbed through the cavity wall. We tried all the traps and tried to do it all humanly but it was a waste of time and money and led the rats to breed which meant more deaths nip it in the bud early ;)
 
My main concern really is that they will take the poison into the GPs cage. Can they do this?
 
You really do need to get someone in...they can breed every 25 day,they are only pregnant for about 20 ish days and they can have a litter of anything from 4-8.I am sure the pest control man would be able to advise you as to the GPs.good luck xx
 
Get the Pest control person to come and see there are poison traps where the culprits stay in the box there may be other things he can suggest I really think you need to sort it out now as like sammy says the more they breed the worse the problem will be.
 
Oh yes I am going to get them man in, I am just worries as he says that there is no risk on the mice taking the poison in the GP cage but I am not so sure :-\
 
We rented a home a few years ago that the landlord had put down D-Con poison, found it everywhere! In my daughters clothes, in my cupboards...the mice moved it and stored it like food. I would be afraid it would end up in the GP's cage too. Try peanut butter or bacon. I use pb and it works every time I have a friend with a farm who rubs bacon all over the trap and the smell attracts them. I understand the desire to be humane but wild mice do carry disease. We have pet mice and sure love our rodents but relocating the ones you cantch in traps will just give them to someone else!

They are in a C&C but I guess a cage wouldn't be that different as they will be able to get through the bars

I am not bothered about being humane now tbh I just want rid of them. Our traps so far haven't caught anything. :(
 
A good idea would be to have your piggies fostered out for a few weeks so you can get the mice out without risk to piggies. That way the pigs will be safe and the poisen can go down to rid you of mice ;)
 
I just wondered as if they are in cages you could maybe move them somewhere a little less accessable. but C&C would prove a little more difficult :(
 
I would move the guineas out of the flat for a bit...foster, like pumpkinpiggie said. What a shame this has happened over winter as in the summer they could've lived outside. Would making a lid to put on the C&C work? Or do you have the large holes type of grid? (I guess mice can get through these) I have the mesh style grids and with a top nothing can get in :)
 
I can't think of anyone in London (which is where I am) who would have them for a while. I guess this is a last resort.

I am in a flat so no garden here for them to live anyway.

At the moment I have the C&C with the large holes but I do have a box of the mesh C&C I would try. I would have though they would still be able to get in though - maybe through the gaps in between the grids? (I have read somewhere that they can squeeze themselves to the size of a pencil !)

What a headache!
 
Another Idea put the piggies in a animal boarding costly yes but the damage mice can do can run into thousands. Or what about a cage that is on a stand. Is all the food extra stored in airtight containers ect.
Hope you get this sorted quickly you must be going out of you mind.

Going to have a look at cages on stand - good idea!
Do you know if any are big enough for 3 piggies?

Yep this is driving me nuts now! :(
 
I'm in essex....not that far from you...if push comes to shove and you need to get them out the flat for a bit,I'm sure I can help you...Islingtons only about 40 mins drive away....pm if you need to ;) :)

Sammy that is such a kind offer thank you. I am going to have a look for a cage on a stand (if they do them big enough for 3 piggies)

Presumably if the cage in on a metal stand with metal legs they won't be able to get up there right? Not so sure now!
 
I live in essex also so if you dont take up sammy's offer then they can have a home here for a while, you could look on freecycle for an outside hutch you might get lucky :)
 
I have looked online and cannot find a cage on a stand big enough for 3 piggies. I guess if it came to it I could get one and make sure they are out all day with me (I work from home and they can free range in my office) until the mice clear off.

For tonight I am going to try swapping for the mesh grids with a lid and popping the C&C on the dining table (reducing the chances of the mice getting in there).

I am also going to try the bacon and peanut butter with the traps.

Failing that I guess I will have to guess the piggies out of the flat until the problem is sorted. I'd rather not have to go down that road though :'( :'( :'(
 
spoke to OH ..he's in charge of de mousing ;D...he said they are partial to burnt sausage :P and he swears by the zapper traps,worth a try,I'd put in a bit of everything that everyone suggested,they can't be that fussy ::) let us know how you get on S xx

Thanks Sammy. I am going to get some more traps tonight and try it with different baits. With the guineas less accessible (mesh grids and on the table) hopefully they will go for the traps.
 
We had mice, one came out late one night so my dad shot it with an air rifle...........
 
well I caught my first mouse last night! :) sorry I know it is wrong but it doe make me feel smiley


The plan seems to be working as the mice have not been able to get into the C&C (no evidence of them having been in anyway).
Hopefully this is the first of many!
 
Yes will do.
To be honest after seeing how they enjoy being higher up (they are a lot less scared when we come up) I am going to be buying them their own table to live on. :)
