Hi everyone, i need some help here.

Last Thursday. my guinea pig choking like mad and not eating pooping drinking but he on baytril. I went to see another vet. The vet give me 5 medicine.

Bromhexine for abnormal breathing
Prednisolone for anti inflammatory and pain relieve
Metoclopramide for gut motiity

2 antibiotics are Cotrimex and Metrogyl Suspension.

During the 2nd day, he feed on critical rate. He poop. However on the 3rd to 4th day, he stop pooping. I bring him to see the vet again.

Vet did not change the antibiotic(do not have other kind of antibiotic to prescribe). She gave Vitamin B complexion for digestion and appetite. Polysilic3 for bloat relieve. I also ask for pro biotic fibreplex.

During the 5th day, he still not pooping. the following day he poop small pieces but stomach in pain (chewing his chew and eye open and close) and still not eating on his own.

I need advice if i should continue medication and hand feeding him. How long it take for them to recover.

I need advice thx alot. Sooory for the long story@)

Where do you live? I suspect you are either in the USA or somewhere else as a lot of the medications you describe are not normally offered here in the UK

Who is your vet?

Why was he on baytril in the first place. What were his symptoms?

How long has he been on baytril until he started choking?
Is he still on baytril? -

You need to hand feed him 100ml per day of either Oxbow Cirtical Care or Supreme Recovery...keep his guts moving and his weight up. Weigh him daily to monitor for wieght loss.

You mention he is now on:

a) cotrimex (no such antibioitic that I can find - please look again and spell its; name out carefully)

b) metrogyl is metronidiazole - that is a hefty antibioitic against Gram negative bacteria ....normally used in abdominal post op complications

c) Prednisolone is a powerful steroid...not normally given to guinea pigs unless as a last resort

d) It sounds like he has a digestive motility problem and is being given the right treatment (metaclopromide) ...

e) bromohexine - I have to admit I have NEVER come across this before being used to treat guinea pigs IN THE UK - I see it is used to treat mucus-related respiratory disorders.

It sounds to me like your vet doesn;t know what is wrong and has chosen to throw the "whole nuclear arsenal" of drugs at your piggie. This means actually your piggie could have a fighting chance....because in the Uk normally no vet would have the guts to do this.

Please keep us updated

I'm sorry I can;t be of more help and hope your piggie makes a full recovery. He's certainly getting drugs he couldn;t expect to get here in the UK.

Hi, I live in Singapore.

He was ill in November 2010 caught with URI, on baytril but sometime he get well sometime get sick so is on off.

My guinea pig is underweight. I maintain his weight at 670g. How much critical care he need? Is 100ml too much for him?

The antibiotic is Co Trimex.

He seem no appetite. He swallow all the liquid fluid. To simulate his poop, I massage his stomach.

Is the antibiotic causing pain in his stomach? If i stop the medication what likely may happen?

Hi thanx for the reply. Your location in Singapore explains why he has the drugs he has been given...tropical countries require harder and greater amounts of anitbiotics etc to combat infection.

Co-trimaxole is actually trimethorpim/sulfa (called septrin in this country) so he has the right anitbiotics to knock out most types of bacterial infections.

670g is as you say underweight. You need to try and feed him with 120ml cirtical care over 24 hours....will he eat it off a spoon or does he need force feeding? if he will eat voluntarily then try and feed 20ml every 4 hours. If he needs force feeding try and feed 10ml every 2 hours, rinsing his mouth with water every few mls of food.

Keep massaging his stomach gently....it will be about 48 hours from his first metoclopramide (gut motility stimulant) injection that he will start to poo again. If he hasn;t pood within 48 hours go back to the vet immediately for another injection.

Do NOT stop the antibioitics. Might be worth feeding a pro-bioitic such as fibreplex or Avipro in view of the anitbioitics he is being given.

The most important thing is that he has been given some pretty hefty (good) drugs to deal with whatever is causing his problem....but you also need to keep his guts moving by getting liquid food into him over the next 48-72 hours to give the drugs a chance to work. It's good that he's eating...if he starts refusing to eat then go back to the vet again straight away.

Hey thank alot for your help.

It worry me alot because it have been so many day he still no appetite. He need to be force feed by syringe but he won't puke them out so is great for me.

He did a wonderful job my poop small bit. I am so happy for him and feel my effort are worth as I watch over him and care for him for 24 hrs.

May I know how much water should i give to him?

My concern now is I scare overfeeding him with little poop coming out from him. I scare might cause blockage or bloat.

Thx

oh i hope your baby is ok, does he have a name?

Sending you massive healing vibes for him, please continue to let us know how he is doing.

How old is he?

Hi,

My guinea pig name Brown. He is brown in color.

He doing great now able to poop but still no appetite (eat a few pellet on his own). I believe is progressing as the amount of poop and shape getting normal.

It need alot of time to take care and pay attention to him. I will be there for him till he recover.

Pray hard for him. He is brave like to explore(even when he is sick). Love to chew. Such a pig, cheer for him YAH!

I will continue to update you guy!

I def agree that your vet is doing his hardest by prescribing all these meds-metronidazole is one very hefty antibiotic, it may upset his little tummy, though. prednisolone does wonders-I've seen it clear up asthma flare-ups very quickly, and my cat was even on it for a long time for his arthritis!

I hope your piggy gets better. He is very small-my 10month old piggies are almost 1.3kg now. You could also give him some bran? My piggies love it as a treat, and it's full of fibre.
