Hi All (first post),
We rescued an old male pig about 8 months ago, we think he's a pretty old fella but we've seemed to have brought him back into good health. However over the last 48 hours he seems to have developed an strange sore on his back (pic attached) not sure if this is fungal or something more serious? He's eating and drinking fine but it somewhat more lethargic. Always been kept clean, de-liced and had plenty of outdoor space. Time for a trip to the vets or could this be something we could treat? Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I don't know what it is but I'd take him to the vet for a check up. It could end up being something really easy to treat :)

Hi! it can be either fungal or mange mites. Please see a vet for a proper diagnosis and the appropriate treatment. Poor boy! He looks rather sore!

Mange mites will need a higher dosed ivermectin product than what you can get in shops (those are only for preventative treatment). He would need at least three rounds to kill off any emerging eggs, about 1-2 weeks apart depending on the product. Injections are the most effective way of treating an acute guinea pig, but not all vets will do this. You also need to treat any companions.

For fungal, we currently find imaverol dips and oral itrafungol the most effective treatment. Please be aware that lab tests are only for ringworm but not other forms of fungal infections. Here are more tips: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/ringworm-hygiene-and-pictures.115402/

With members from all over the world, it is very helpful for us to always give you the best advice for your part of the globe if you added your country, state or (for the UK) your county/city to your details. Thanks!

I agree that looks very sore. I would ask the vet for pain relief too.

The skin looks fluoresced to me even where there is hair (not just on the sore patch) which is a sign of fungal. This could quite possibly be a combination problem though of both fungal and mange mites.

If you are in the UK, we have got a piggy savvy vets locator on the top bar, if you ever need it.

On companions we have 2 girls in a separate cage who dont mix (for romance reasons) should we be okay without treating these?

As long as they don't mix, they should be reasonably safe. if you are still worried, I would recommend easimec, which is what I treat my other piggies with as soon as one comes down with mites.

I would also recommend to use F10 disinfectant, as it is antifungal unlike most of the available products .

Hi Guys,
Not great news, looks like it was worst than we first thought. Buddy was in a lot of pain so we took the painful decision to have him put to sleep this morning. Thanks for everybody's help and input, we've still got Buttercup & Daisy at home so we'll definitely be on here again, as the support and knowledge is fantastic. Now the hard part of breaking it to the kids, Gracie (profile pic) will be devastated. Pic below is of a happy buddy!
