Hi I'm new to this site and Just after any advice if possible, I took my piggie gizmo to vets last week as not eating pellets and losing weight, he went in on Wednesday for dental under ga and has gone totally downhill since, he is not eating anything at all so I am syringe feeding and giving water, have been back to vets also and been told to keep doing as I am, I'm really concerned and not sure whether to keep trying this or if he is in pain/unhappy to have him put to sleep, just feel so sorry for him and just not sure how long I should keep trying for? He is hunched in corner with eyes closed most of the time, any advice would be appreciated on how long recovery usually takes or if I should prepare for the worst?

Did the vet say what they thought was wrong? And are they cavy savvy (we have a recommended list on the tabs at the top of the page). Is he on any pain medication? He should have recovered from the GA by the next day probably. Is he still losing weight and how often are you syringe feeding him? Has the vet suggested having him pts?

Hi welcome to the forum, am sorry it is under worrying circumstances. Please could you update your location on your profile as it will help us help you.

Are you ok with syringe feeding? we have a guide if it would help?

I am worried that he is hunched, is he on any pain relief from the vets?

There is a very good vet in Northampton called Simon Maddock, it may be an idea to speak to him about Gizmo's prognosis, but I think he is on holiday this week. This is his website:

Originally the teeth but once done said only one of the back ones was sharp so possibly not that and to see how he went after recovering from ga and if still not eating pellets then to take poop samples and get blood tests if no better as could be some kind of infection,he was fine before going in just a bit weight loss but now I just want to get him eating anything, he is on oral painkiller and I asked for antibiotics on Saturday when I went back so has been having that since Saturday and I'm still giving him the painkiller

Where are you based we may be able to suggest a knowledgeable vet?

I run a sanctuary for guinea pigs with dental issues and therefore have a lot of experience of dental problems.

How much syringe food are you managing to get into your piggy? You need to aim for around 120 mls per 24 hours although if you can't manage this much, every bit you can get in is a bonus.

The Sanctuary vet, Simon Maddock, can do dental work without the need for GA and this means he can do follow up dental work regularly, which really helps with getting the piggy eating for him/herself again. Once they are eating then the time between dentals can start to be stretched out further and further.

We have had fantastic success with so many piggies.

What exactly was the problem with your guinea pigs teeth? Was there ulceration and soft tissue trauma to the mouth? Was the tongue trapped by overgrown teeth?

The thing with dental issues is it is difficult to know if the dental issues are a problem in themselves or if they are the result of something else going on. I would speak to your vet again though if he is hunched up most of the time. He may also need a tweak to his pain meds.

The vet had said that the back teeth looked sharp and that was more than likely why he could not eat the pellets, he was eating hay and veg fine, but after going in said only one was sharp and they'd filed it down, no obvious ulcers or sores, I was struggling with the feeding but using a smaller syringe 1ml and getting about 5 lots in at a time but I just think he's suffering poor little thing

With the 1ml syringe cut the end off it and file it down smooth so the black plunger doesn't come out, this helps with syringe feeding so much and allows you not to squirt it out to fast. We have a hand feeding guide here too http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/complete-hand-feeding-guide.115359/

Just checked on our recommended vet Locator the nearest one to yourself is
