Hey everyone, this is piggle related but more about fears and worries on my end so please bare with me, if this isn't appropriate then please let me know.

So yesterday after holding my new baby female and my nearly six year old female together I put them back leaving the shed door open (as I usually do during daylight hours) came inside and started doing some jobs, it wasn't ten minutes later that a husky 4 doors down appeared in the garden (our fences are six feet tall per house) my heart literally stopped, I have an open cage and never once have there been any problems, my pigs are use to roaming the garden freely during the summer which they loved, and there are no foxes because of the sheer number of houses and human activity.
I immediately ran down but it was too late. I still have nightmares because I had a second old sow that we though had fallen out of the cage four days before Christmas..... Guess how wrong we where.
Now I am terrified to go back down there because it feels like I genuinely failed them, the one that died before Christmas was inquisitive and would have wanted to say hello because she got on with our dog, so now I'm stuck in a rut, sad and feel like a failure. Any advice? We're keeping the door closed at all times now, but that doesn't stop the paranoia, I haven't seen them since yesterday and just thinking of going makes me feel sick. Thank you in advance.

Hello. I am a little unsure of what has gone on so apologies.
Has the husky attacked your pigs as you mentioned it was too late?

Apologies for my confusion but at this point in time my advice would be not to dwell on the past but go and check on your pigs, whatever has happened as happened we can never change past. However we can change future so maybe it is time to think of more secure set ups, as in life there are no guarantees. We wear a seatbelt not because we expect to have a car accident these are thankfully rare occurrences but we wear them in case.

I hope the above makes sense and wish you calm peace of mind

yes, the husky got in and attacked both senior piggies, shouldn't have been in our garden in the first place, basically the piggle that died yesterday was mauled by the dog/puppy, but finding her and looking at her made me remember what the first one looked like and realise that the dog killed my other just before Christmas.

I am sorry to read this. So with the risk of sounding insensitive do you have any remaining piggies?

Just after Christmas I got 3 sows before my older one passed, already had one boar, so instead of 3vs1 it was 2vs3

You need to check on your piggies today as that is part of the responsibility we have of caring for them.

I would advise securing your setup for the future to avoid any further heartache

I am sorry for your losses. Please feel to post a memorial post to your piggies in our rainbow bridge section

I would add further you are not a failure, accidents happen in life and so do situations, it is important to learn from things that happen.

You had not planned for your piggies to be attacked by the dog as they had been quite safe. Do not keep torturing yourself with what ifs… look to the future and how you can care for those you have now

Take care

Already done, they have a pad lock and a top bolt on the door which BOTH are now being used at all times, currently with little mouse and the older one is in a box now ready to ve buried 😔

That is all you can do just make sure hutch is predator proof.
I am sorry you are feeling upset, have virtual hug, go and see you piggies they will make you feel better

You are certainly not failing them, i'm so sorry for your losses! I'd also be taking it up with the owner of the husky, it is THEIR responsibility to make sure their dog can't get out of their garden and now it's harmed someone elses pets.

I don't know if this link would be of any help. Dogs are not supposed to be allowed to roam free even in their neighbourhood because they can attack other people and animals - as has very sadly happened here. It might be worth having a word with the owner to point out that their dog has been in at least twice and killed your pets on your property both times. They must control their dog... it is not a wild animal like a fox or a rat, and different laws apply to things like cats, but dogs must be controlled. Personally if I saw the dog in the garden again I'd be taking action. I'm so sorry this has happened to you x
Controlling your dog in public

Owner have been told now, they will hopefully replace my water bottle after the dog broke mine (kept in outside cage) and after the first time, they though they had fixed the gate to keep him in the garden but apparently not (the dog probably had a taste for small animals now) and somehow scaled 6 foot fences over four houses to get to ours 😔

At the end of the day, they shouldn't have kept the dog home alone at all because of the breed (husky) they offered to pay for another piggle but I don't think they understand how heards work, can't just pay for a puggle then hope they're accepted.

I'm so sorry for your loss :( It is the owners of the dogs fault, not yours. The dog shouldn't have been in your garden in the first place.

Not the same thing but a few years ago, I fell unconscious down the stairs landing on one of my piggies who was free roaming at the time killing her instantly. I still feel guilty and always will do and I am always haunted by it but things happen and we shouldn't blame ourselves.

I would take up their offer and accept the money for another piggy to join your remaining ones. You could take them dating at a rescue to make sure they get on. Having a new pig to fuss over may help you feel better x

It sounds like the owners were appropriately horrified if they are trying to make amends. Some folks are like, 'well it's a dog and that's what dogs do"* and it's more difficult to get them to take action then. They've at least had a warning now to be on the alert. We've had poor traumatised posters before where rats have broken into outside cages and attacked their piggies - you can only do so much sometimes. Time will ease things. Make the most of your brave survivor x

* My little terrace house fronts onto a street so people walk past my front window without really thinking about people being 3 feet away. That's quite funny. But one day I open the door and a nice little dog is just cocking it's leg against the frame while the owner stands there holding the lead and watching and the pee goes up the frame (which causes a whiffy hallway problem in itself) and into the house all over the mat and on my shoes. I'm like, "Oh come ON! It's a front door!" And they guy - who is quite miffed I'm complaining - goes, "well he's a dog... that's what dogs do!". If you LET them... if you LET them that's what they do. The dog actually looked quite mortified (if an elderly Jack Russel can look mortified).
