Help !
Sorry I haven't been on here in a while- double hip relacement but need help and advice

One of my pigs - well to be honest my favourite piggy Roger is really ill

We noticed he wasn't chewing properly and losing weight a couple of weeks ago - he was trying his damdest to eat and other than hard pellets which took him ages nothing was going down. Straight to the vets who said his back teeth were overgrown and took him in and filed his teeth down. Well it's been a week and half now and he's still no better, he has a cold for which we are giving him antibiotics and it's a daily struggle to get the liquid recovery stuff down him, we chop grass very finely plus chopped soft fruit, shredded carrot etc.... am I doing the right things ? To be honest it's breaking mine and my sons hearts .... any advice welcomed please xx>>>

Oh poor boy. I can't give you any advice, but I will wish you lots of luck and hope he gets better soon.

I am sorry to hear Roger is unwell. It could be both the dental problem and the respiratory infection that is affecting his ability to eat, the combination can be trickier to get past if his breathing is laboured.

What are his exact symptoms? Does he make any effort to eat at all? How is his weight - is it stable or is he still losing weight?

I can email across a factsheet re syringe-feeding, PM me your email address if you are interested

Thank you Laura- Roger is trying to eat but is chewing for ages and making tooth grinding noises and then loses interest. He had an antibiotic injection at the vets and we have liquid antibiotic to give him and he's stopped wheezing and his nose is drier. He's still losing weight bless him despite our best efforts- it's a good job I'm still off work after my ops and have time to keep trying (every hour)

Will pm my email address to you - hope thats ok

Thanks again

Julie

Hi Julie, I have emailed you the factsheet, I hope it is helpful.

How long is it since his teeth were trimmed? It sounds like they need correcting again; it is normal for pigs with dental problems who are not eating anything independently, to need dental work every 1-2 weeks.

Thank you for fact sheet Laura, it's very helpful. Have liquified Burgess excell and got 2 small syringes of it down him plus he's tried some oats with finely shredded apple - it will be 2 weeks on thurs since his op, one of our probs at moment is my son is working away and as I've had a hip replacement on 8th Aug i can't drive so am relying on neighbours to take him to the vet.

Anyway, it's feeding time so will go and try again mallethead

thank you everyone for best wishes

julie
