I thought Henry was crying when weeing last Fri so took him to the vets. He wee'd on the table whilst we were there (but no squeaking) so she tested it for blood and protein but nothing showed up. He was in pain again last night so he's booked in at 4:50 today.

How do I take a sample to the vets if I can get one? Is it ok to leave it in the syringe?

I've also got cranberry juice, how much should I give?

I'm out today, so might not post back to replies until mid afternoon. All advice appreciated! x

You can put piggy in to a pet carrier or something else with a plastic service (just make sure it is clean). Wait for piggy to pee and then suck up with the syringe. You can either leave in the syringe or pour the urine in to a clean sealed pot of some kind. I have used those brown plastic tablet bottles before. Put the urine in the fridge until you are ready to take to the vets. The fresher the sample, the better.

Good luck xx

Sorry to hear that Henry is under the weather. Claire's suggestions for obtaining a wee sample are great. As far as cranberry juice is concerned i don't think you can give too much. I generally give a few syringe fulls several times a day, as much as the piggy concerned will take really.

If Henry is still uncomfortable when weeing/pooing I would push for an x-ray, the earlier a stone is diagnosed the better, particularly where boars are concerned. If a UTI is confirmed Septrin in generally the better choice on antibiotic for this problem.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Fingers crossed you can figure out what's up and get poor little Henry back to his usual self very soon x

Sorry to hear it looks like Henry may have a UTI, he is the little chap you had neutered recently? I remember you posting about his soggy bum!

I agree with what Claire said about collecting a sample. Good luck at the vets. xx

Thanks everyone, just on my way home now.

Yes Laura he is my recently neutered boy :( he's been doing so well.

Right....... We've been.......

I managed to get a good sized sample of urine just before we left which was great. The vet we were booked in to see isn't the complete cavy savy one, she knows a fair bit, but I prefer Craig tbh.

Anyhoo, she tested it straight away and came back to show us the strip and there were speckles of blood on it, which there weren't in the test on Friday.

She said about prescribing an antibiotic and said that they use Baytril, I asked for Septrin instead and she was fine with this.

She had to work out the dosage as she advised she would normally prescribe the Baytril instead, but said to give 0.3ml once a day for 5 days (although I have 3ml so have enough for 10 days). She's also said about trying to get another sample to test for the all clear and to bring him back if I'm concerned etc.

Is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks :)

Oh! I also asked about x-rays and GA and she said she didn't know, I'd have to ask Craig as he's the one who performs the ops etc. She said he did have to put a rabbit under but she wasn't sure of the procedures for piggies.

Henry is quite small isn't he? Just because I had to give Dolly 0.1ml of septrin once a day (I think)

Hope he gets well soon!

Poor Henry. What does he weigh? Spike's on Septrin at the moment for a suspected UTI and he has 0.5ml twice a day and 0.1ml of Metacam (the cat one) He is quite a big boy at 1.2kg
Keep your eye on his poos! He might need a probiotic to help his gut if they get smelly and / or runny. Antibiotics sometimes have that effect although I've been lucky with both my boys, Septrin seem to be ok for them.

Fingers crossed it does the trick. Stripes had a UTI a few weeks back and it was cleared up in three days. (although we finished the course) Spike's been having the problem a lot longer, really stubborn so it can take a while to clear.

He weighed 503g on Sunday 11th July (Sunday is weigh day) so he's only little. He's approx 14.5 weeks old, don't know exact DOB but was told he was 8.5 weeks old when I got him so born on/around 1st April.

I've been chatting to Lisa who pointed me towards another thread which had people's views of doses on it, and most ppl are saying (adult piggy) 0.5ml-1.0ml twice a day, so 0.3ml once a day even for a little piggy seems very low(? opinions please!) Perhaps it should be 0.3ml twice a day.

I think I threw her a bit asking for the Septrin as she said she had to calculate on his weight as she'd normally give Baytril which she knew. Maybe the Baytril is just once a day?

I'm going to ring them in the morning and ask Craig, feel a bit rude doing it, but I'm not convinced. I can ask about the GA as well incase it gets that far.

Well based on Spike's dose he has a total of 1ml a day and he's more than double Henry's weight so using that as a guide I guess 0.3ml is about right if you look at it that way.
Probably best to start low and if it doesn't work ask the vet to look at increasing it.

I would check with the vet who has more experience as well. I don't think it's rude at all. Hope Henry's feeling better soon. x

Have replied to your PM Kimberley but for others info as well - for a piggie of Henry's weight, 0.3ml twice daily is the average. Dosage sounded fine to me but I suspected 2x daily to be preferable - double checked this on Guinea Lynx for Henry's weight and it is accurate.

Adult pigs typically refer to those 800g or more, so 0.5ml+ would be apt then. :)

Thank you Laura :) I'll up the frequency.

I also replied to you but I'll ask here as well incase anyone else searches the forum at a later date... Can infant Calpol be given as pain relief along side the Septrin? Thank you! xx

Yes it can if needed; for his size and age I would give 0.1ml 2x daily. :)
