Hi everyone I've sadly lost peanut a while ago went to check on him and found he had passed away couldn't understand it he passed away on the Thursday but was fine.on the Tuesday and Wednesday I have another guinea pig called popcorn I got him last night the only thing.I can think.off with peanut I was lining his.hutch with newspaper then shaving on top could.it of been this as I never knew about ink in newspaper I will never use it again

I am so sorry you lost Peanut. It would not have been the newspaper as now they are made with non toxic ink. Please do not blame yourself. It is likely he was unwell and hiding an illness as guinea pigs are so good at that.

Losing a guinea pig unexpectedly can really throw you as you cannot brace for it!

Unfortunately, guinea pigs are prey animals and very good at hiding any problems for a long time. There is also a number of problems that can strike out of the blue, like acute heart failure, a stroke, walking (atypical) pneumonia or even multiple organ failure in older piggies; they all can kill within hours or even just moments. Poisoning is actually much rarer, and doesn't happen from newspaper.

Your desperate search to find an explanation and your feelings of guilt/failure are very normal for the onset of the grieving process. They mean that are in fact a very caring and responsible piggy mummy and that there is nothing you have to blame yourself for. Unfortunately, unless you want to have a pretty expensive post mortem performed, you will never know what really happened.

You are welcome to post a tribute Peanut in our Rainbow Bridge section anytime it feels right for you.

Here are tips on what you can do for Popcorn in the coming days:

I'm so sorry to hear you have lost Peanut.

I hope you enjoy being on this forum. There 's lots of information here which I am sure you will find useful for looking after Popcorn

I don't know as his previous owner said he wouldn't get on withheld other piggies

Often people think that because it can take time for a boar to find the right friend. If you take him to one of the recommend rescues they can try him with others to see if he can find a match. It is worth a try as if he can find a friend he will be so much happier as guinea pigs are happiest with company of their own kind.

You are a guinea pig slave when you

1: practising wheeks so you can communicate

2: pick fruit veg based on what they like

3: no.longer think.of popcorn as a food!

Sorry for your loss, my piggie lost his friend suddenly in a similar situation he had no signs of illness or problems. as mentioned above they are good at hiding illness.
