guineapiglover

Hi everyone I'm mallory.i dont really have a guinea pig yet but in a couple more weeks i will.my moms friend just bought her first guinea pig for her daughter.and we went over to her house and my mom noticed how fat she was.a couple more days later my mom friend called and said she has gotten bigger and they can feel baby guinea pigs moving in her stomach.so she is going to have babys here soon.so I'm am getting a free baby guinea pig!so exciting for me.but here is a question how long until they can go away from they're mommies after they are born?i know you can hold the baby guinea pigs right after they are born.

Ok, you need to tell your Mums friend to take the boys away from their mum and sisters at 3 weeks old. It's very important even if they still look young as they can get their mum & sisters pregnant.
To sex guinea pigs have a look at this site

Guinea pigs like to be in pairs (either male and male, or female and female) so ideally your mum's friend should keep her pig and a daughter as a companion.

welcome to the forums from me and the girls from oz :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: it is better if you can get 2 piggies as piggies like piggy company. hope you have fun, learn heaps and make many friends. good luck with getting your piggy/ies. hoping goes all well for your friends piggy and the delivery, you can also in the UK get piggies from rescues instead of petshops. there is a rescue thread on this forum. again welcome. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Hi welcome to the forum :) any male babies need to be taken away after about 3 weeks so they dont get their mum or sisters pregnant, the girls can stay longer but at least 6 weeks :) also, you are best getting two piggies because they love company and you will get more out of them as pets if theyre in pairs because they interact and are funny to watch :) if you absolutely can only have one i'd say take a boy because they cope better than girls without a friend :)

Great news for you. O0

Remember to tell your friend's Mom to take the boys away from their mum at 3 weeks of age....they could get mum and any sisters pregnant. The girls can stay with mum as long as she wants them to stay with. If it's a single piggy then it's advisable to keep at least one daughter with the mum.

Yes you can pat the little guinea pigs soon after they've been born. I've always given my lot 24 hours after birth before I acutally handled any of them. Young guinea pigs are very difficult to sex - so keep looking week after week to make sure you've got it right. So many "so called girls" ended up being boys after all as they grew. :)

If there are two boys in the litter you can keep those two together. Even if there are three boys or more they tend to get on a bit easier with each other if they are from the same litter instead of having to introduce new boars to existing boars.

So enjoy the waiting game.
