Hi, I'm new here and still spending hours hop0ing around the seperate forums and reading and reading and trying to digest lol so may have missed this totally but....what is a natural diet for GP's? We feed our dog BARF stylee and the chickens free range (mostly) and feed our other pets in as natural way as possible as to us it makes sense to
The most important food for guinea pigs is hay. They need unlimited access to it at all times. They must always have fresh water too. They need fresh vegetables twice a day and fruit can be a treat a few times a week. They are given dried food which helps to add vitamins to their diet.
Up to 80% of hay daily - supplemented with a selection of fresh veg and pellets for minerals and vitamins (especially vitamin C, which guinea pigs can produce in their bodies). But hay is the main food stuff that keeps the guts balanced and the back teeth ground down.
Guinea pigs live in small herds in the grasslands of the lower Andes. Each group moves around a territory that is big enough for the grass to grow back by the time they come back to it again. Guinea pigs will supplement their diet with whatever else that is edible for them they come across.
