Hi, I'm new.

I've had ginnie pigs in the past when I was five and I didn't know much on the care of them, It's been 2 years now when my babies oogle and Sophie past and before I get a new ones, I want to know more on there care. So please can anyone help me?

Thank you!

Piggies,x

hi nice to 'meet' ;D you :)
well it's hard to just tell you everything like that, so as Merry and Rosie said, why not ask some questions for us to answer? :)

I would suggest buying a CARE FOR YOUR GUINEA PIG book, they are about £5-7 on amazon and will cover the basics :smitten:

good idea O0 The Proper Care Of Guinea-pigs By Peter Gurney might be a good one O0
how many were you thinking of getting?

Umm.. Questions :D is it ok to keep my ginnie pigs out doors? as I did with my others and they seemed to be alright.
I dunno anything about breeds so please can you give me a bit about them?
I did have a book, When I was five (I just looked at the pictures) Then I gave it to my friend because she wanted Ginnie pigs.
Is a Nero 4 cage big for Ginnie pigs?

It is better to keep your guinea pigs indoors if you can. I had 4 outside in the summer but have brought them in and they will stay indoors now.

There are different types of breeds, abysynnian that has rosettes, Peruvian that is covered in fur. Rex that has has curly whiskers and a fuzzy fur look. If you search guinea pig breeds on google loads will come up with pics.

A Nero 4 would be big enough for 2 guinea pigs. :)

generally people seem to have the common breeds, I myself am becoming an agouti fancier, seeing as Hamish is very sexy :smitten:

you can keep piggies outdoors in the summer, but you will need a proper hutch and a shed or somewhere they can go in the winter.
I keep mine outdoors in summer and in a heated shed in winter, as a member of my fa ily has a mild hay allergy and having all the hay indoors, was making their chest etc. bad. :) But mine come in for 3 quarters of an hour floor time and cuddles too :)
2 is good and a Nero 4 is fine for 2 :) there are lots of breeds, but as others have said people seem to have common breeds generally. You are most likely to see smoothairs and abbysinians in pet shops. :) i like the different breeds as well as those too though.
Umm it could just bee the dust getting up their noses, did you use dust extracted hay? if you use that, they probably wouldn't sneeze, unless they have an allergy or something :) they love hay though O0 it's an important part of their diet

guineas are like humans, some of them are more sensitive than others to hay and things, readigrass might be an alternative to think about

They need a constant supply of hay just get the dust free variety. You can get it online for £7.95 http://www.dustfreehay.co.uk/ They need timothy hay to keep their teeth down it also helps with digestion.

I give mine readigrass, a bowl a day for supper but they still need hay. The diet should consist of 80% hay, 15% veggie and 5% dried pellets or museli (I prefer dried pellets as their is no select feeding)

My Rex sneezes, he does have a sensitive nose (is allergic to woodshavings) only worry if accompanied by sniffles.

I would also get a couple of pigs from a rescue rather than a pet shop. :)

yeah i think rescuing is better too, there are so many piggies needing homes out there :)
and yeah some are more sensetive to hay than others O0

Um, I was wondering as my mum always wanted to do this is to if I get from a breeder to breed my ginnies because my mum has always wanted to do this, I'd only breed them a couple of times and I'd make sure that they go to good homes. :) So please can you tell me a little basics on breeding.

if you are still newish to the who guinea pig scene, i would leave breeding until you know your guineas better - I am going to do this, out of all of mine Rosie is the only one that could have babies as she is the youngest, but I wouldnt go ahead and do it, if you still are learning - no offence intended.

I wouldn't get from a breeder, there are enough guinea pigs in this world that need good homes. We aren't allowed to discuss breeding on this forum as the rules state that this forum is pro rescue.

I personally think intentional breeding is very irresponsible unless you have a very, very good reason for doing so, like improving a breed and you have to know what you are doing and what they need etc etc.

i tihnk so too, I mean depending where you live there are tonnes of piggies who would love a home - outta interest where in the world are you

Look in the rescue section on here too there are loads that need rehoming. :)

guineapigrehome.org.uk is the best, I'm on there everyday or even some local people give guineas away from free if they dont want them, keep an eye in the papers

i agree i think it's best to go to your local rescue. O0 I wouldn't breed anyway, but i think you need a lot of knowlege as it is a difficult and potentially dangerous thing. And should be taken very seriously. My Peony gave birth, not of my doing (she was pregnant when i got her, not that i knew this :tickedoff:) and it's not easy, luckily everything went well for me, but there is so much to go wrong. It is a big stress on the sow and as i said potentially dangerous. And anyway, there are so many unwanted piggies around needing homes.
Don't worry, at least you were sensible enough to find out first, well done! O0 :)

I've looked on practically every rescue center in my area, and None of them have any piggies. They have Dogs, Cats, Hamsters, Everything else accept Ginnie pigs. >:(

Lots of resuce sites do not update as they are too busy with caring for guinas. I would try looking in the rescue section here and guinea pig rehome. Drop and email to some rescues too. :)
