My mum and I have decided to try and grow some veggies and herbs for the piggies this year and hopefully do it organic. Does anyone know what would be best to plant?

We're hoping to do the same this year :) But of course, know nothing about gardening! LOL

We always grow veg.. well have done for the past 5 or 6 years :P It's pretty easy really ;) Are you growing them outdoors or indoors? We've always been organic and had no problems. What food do they love? Stuff like lettuce is really easy to grow, most herbs are too.

My mums really into gardening so won't be too bad. Prob ging to grow sweetcorn, carrots and some other stuff they like Maybe grow some stuff I like aswell :D

How do you pay for Planet Guinea can you just send a cheque?

we grew lettuce and cabbage but the damn slugs got the lot, left lacey leaves the toms grew well

We're really bad at growing carrots, they always turn out so small, only thing we have trouble with ;) Peppers are really easy but usually need to be under glass if they like them, anyone can grow lettuce too ;)

I'm a self-employed gardener.

I must admit that I'm more experienced with ornamental plants that fruit and vegetables, but most herbs are fairly easy, plus lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, broad beans & runner beans.

Most vegetables and herbs need a sunny site, and you may need to take into account the soil type and improve it by digging it over and incorporating organic matter (compost, manure, organic fertilizer) to do well with veg. In fact I gather guinea pig droppings are a good fertilizer - and that fits in with being organic and recycling stuff! :)

Alternatively, you can grow many herbs and vegetables in containers This may help with the problem of small, short carrots and slug damage to lettuces, if you use a copper ring around the pots.

PM me your order and I'll total it up for you so you can send a cheque. Apart from the Cereal grasses I recommend growing everything outside to get the best from them. Individual tips etc are sent with each variety of seed. The only thing we don't supply is compost or any other growing medium, all you get is pure seed :) The trays are reuseable and come in 2 sizes...

We are looking into doing celery tops and lettuce varieties for the summer :)

Edit: Prices include packing and postage :)

Sorry to drag up an old topic, but i wondered if anybody had success at growing their own food for piggies? I found another thread on the subject but with no replies.

I'm thinking of growing some bits for my pigs, some grass, carrots, peppers and tomatoes probably. Also some parsley if i can manage it as my pigs love it. I dont do a lot of gardening so have no idea where to start. I'm assuming i can grow these in tubs from seeds but will need to do a bit of research. I was just wondering if any of you had tried it and had any successes/failures? I thought growing veg would provide fresh foods for my piggies but also save me some cash, so was wondering if its worth having a go?

My husband grows his own parsley, mint and basil (on the kitchen window sill) - saves me a fortune & piggies love it :smitten:

We never grow our own fruit/veg...

We dont really have any room in our back garden. :'(

I've got a parsley pot on my kitchen windowsill but it doesnt seem to be growing. Doesnt help that the pigs seem to eat it faster than it will grow. Mine just adore parsley.

I might pop to my local garden centre for some advice. I dont know if you can grow anything this time of year other than indoor herbs, though i guess having a windowbox full of parsley, basil and so forth would be a great start! At least i can use it in my cooking as well as have the piggies much on it all.

For me its cheaper to buy fruit and veg than grow it. Herbs are particularly cheap here at the market and an Exotic Superstore.

Wild Chicory and Plantain along with grasses (Tim and Orchard) have done particularly well this year- OK I admit the Rye Grass stood better than the Tim in all that rain! My Chicory is still showing and I am able to pick it still (but not for much longer).

Planet Guinea have a selection of guinea friendly grasses and herbage, there is a new Cereal Grass (indoor) that is much less starchy (most cereal grasses are grown for their starch content) and therefore healthier. PG include hints and tips and a complimentary sample (Cereal Grass for November), with each order. Post and packing included in price.

This month we are sending out RSPCA Animal Welfare goodies and a Guinea Pig Welfare Goody :) Oh, and seeds!
