I'm so sorry to hear this Adelle, even my eye's are tearing. I'm sending lots of positive vibes your way for both you and fudge.

I'm sorry it's been this hard to you...
Really hope she perks up and they find what she has and it's treatable. Sending you loads of hugs and loads of healing vibes to Fudge. We are all with you x

I gave her a cuddle and kisses before they took her away and i just broke down. The thought of losing her is just breaking my heart.

@Wiebke @helen105281 @Abi_nurse is anyone able to dig up any info for me if slippery elm bark and white poplar bark are safe or toxic to pigs? Any info at all. Iv found an advanced recovery feed for herbivores which contains it but thats all i can find online.

If fudges culture results come back negative they are looking at treating her with steroids for an inflammatory intenstine disease, basically ibs.. But obviously we know, as does the vet, that steroids arent a longterm option.

My dog has an inflamatory gut issue, and its managed with dorwest herbs slippery elm bark powder.. Completely herbal with no additives. It may be a safer option for fudge but i need the info to show my vet

Have googled it. Slippery elm bark and poplar bark seem to be used in homeopathic treatments for guinea pigs if that is of any help to you?

The only negative i can see is it can slow absorption of other medications as it slightly slows the guts so nutrients and excess water can be absorbed to allow nornal stools to form, and soothing the mucousal lining.. So she'd need to have it a few hours spaced apart between her heart meds. Obviously il need to run it past the vet. Thanks @Wiebke x

:( just catching up with little Fudge, keeping you both very much in my thoughts x

Fudge is home! Still horrendous diarrohea but much brighter from having fluids. They suspect she was dehydrated causing her to be flat this morning, as she was still very bright up until then. She is eating but not a normal amount, so iv to continue with syringe feeding. Her weight is up 30g from this morning sl they must have been feeding her well. I have an array of hays for her to enjoy shes had a slight taste of them but i suspect she'll be worn out from her busy day.

Its a matter of waiting for her stool culture to come back so we can treat accordingly.. If its clear, they are suspecting an inflammatory gut issue, which they want to trial treat with steroids. They said if it is kidney failure we will know before the results come in, as she will obviously deteriorate quickly. If she remains stable, we will continue as we are with gut protectants, fibreplex and probiotics, as well as hand and syringe feed and watering to top her up.

The vet has agreed it is safe for me to try her on the slippery elm bark powder my dog takes for inflammatory gut issues (purely herbal), and i really hope it works.

So.. Some positives in there I'm trying to focus on. We will take each day as it comes like usual.

Thank you all for the support!

Love fudge and i x

(Bright eyed baby this evening!)

Oh no, sending out lots of hugs to you both.

Sending healing vibes and hoping that Fudge will bounce back the way she always has. You have done so much for her but all is not lost yet and if she really is in kidney failure please please try to remind yourself that Fudge had such an amazing and caring owner who gave her a quality of life many regular pet owners may have given up on int he very early days of her health issues.

Really, so are so dedicated it is awe inspiring. Try and get a good rest (easier said than done) and try not to let yourself get too upset until we know what tomorrow may bring.

And apparently I missed some updated.

YAAAAAY Fudge is home! You little trooper you!

Great to see you home and feeling a little better Fudge. Let's hope mummy's medicine will help your tummy. Sending lots of hugs to you and your inspiring mum

Sending you good luck and healing vibes gorgeous Fudge! You're a fighter little lady :luv:

Can guinea pigs chew on a limb from a slippery elm tree?
not sure on the reliability but looks like the top answer uses it

also shepherds purse & bramble leaves (no prickles can be used to help reduce diarrhea

peter gurneys piggy potions book recommends Denes Gastric pills
Digestion+ Powder for Dogs and Cats - Denes Natural Pet Care
i found these but i think it must be a renamed product the book says contains kaolin, sodium, bicarbonate, liquorice & peppermint oil
these look similar to the denes website but it may be worth asking denes if its the same thing if you want to try them ( if the vet agrees)

looks like arrowroot is very popular for dietary diarrhea, but i guess you will need the cultures back to establish if its a bug or not.

such a happy little pig, she's lovely & glad she is home with mum :)
xx

Aw Fudge - beautiful as ever.

We are all so pleased to see you are back home with your Mum.

The vet called bacl about an hour ago i was feeding fudge, she said she contacted a specialist who suggested stopping zantac as this could be making her guts move faster and making the diarrohea worse.

Whilst she was on the phone, fudge tried to defecate and was squealing in pain.. When she passed semi normal droppings, a little blood came with it (this is been the case since she got ill). I mentioned it to the vet and she suggested we reconsider bladder pain or a pelvic issue, and may meed to prescribe metacam tomorrow (she hasnt been on it due to the suspected GI bleeding). She is still doing it, holding her bum in the air when going to poo and squealing. I'm now worried about stones. Shes had 2 scans but she has the vet again tomorrow morning at 10.50am so I'm going to suggest an xray. She is still able to urinate.

All my positivity is now gone! She looks miserable.

Oh Adelle - what a roller coaster for both of you.
Nothing more to add really, other than remember that you know your girl better than anyone.
No one could have a closer bond with a pig than you have with Fudge.
Maybe just try and take some time to talk to her, and ask what she wants you to do.
In your heart you will hear her.

I'm so glad Fudge's home, hopefully the vet has reached the conclusion of her troubles. Every time I hear she's gone to the vet, my stomach turns, you must be the same Adelle.
Mind you I really think you should have a word with her, my heart won't take much more.
I love you both, what a perfect Mum you are. xxxxxxxx
Forgot to say to you make sure you have a good nights sleep tonight, else you won't be any good to Fudge tomorrow.
If you can updates would be good :luv:

Oh what a rollercoaster. I hope the xray shows no stones. I think IC can affect them pooing too if that helps. Sorry I don't know anything about slippery elm but it looks like you have an answer on that anyway. I have also heard that zantac can make things move through a bit quicker than normal too.

Thanks you for digging all that info up for me, its much appreciated! Was in such a faff earlier, was in p@h trying to get her some nice hays, with a dying phone battery whilst waiting on the vet to call! I ended up having to go straight to the vet at the other end of the city to collect her, so really needed some info to back me up!xx

I talk to her all the time.. She replys with kisses on my face (probably trying to shut me up). I had yet another little cry whilst having her out for a feed, talking to her.. She then became very keen to eat the cc from the syringe, and would turn away and lick my tshirt to let me know she wanted water! She'd then have a few ml's before doing the same again, where we'd go back to the cc! She smothered me in kisses when i was cleaning her up.. Think shes telling me not give up on her just yet!

You're welcome. Happy to help, one of my guineas a few years ago had very soft poops I gave her Bramble leaves (blackberry mainly or raspberry leaves) with the prickly bits rubbed/scraped off.
&it did seem to improve for her. But she didnt have any other health issues like fudge &she may have just been improving anyway, but might be worth a go :)

Glad you managed to show the vet the info before your phone died :)

Hopefully she's improving if she's giving mum kisses
T-care of yourself too mind

Xx

So this just happened at her last feed..

image.webp

Would have been brilliant if it wasnt for the fact the screamed and hunched over when passing each and everyone of them; as well as them restarting a small bleed.

She passes them, immediately stops crying and got stuck into some pellets..
image.webp

Girl is such a little trooper.. I tell her to "try her best" when i offer her pellets before her syringe feeds- she looks at me as if to say "well i dont actually want any mum but i guess i'll try!"

Hopefully rule out stones tomorrow with the xray/scan.

She seems gradually brighter (despite the painful defecation) so we are focusing on that xx

Think we may be turning a corner.. I definately see a glimpse of hope looking at the past few hours.

Still passing mostlyo normal poos, slightly less squealing and no blood in the past hour or so.. Acting more herself, eating pellets well, taking her fave meds willingly and fighting like a good un if i touch her chin/neck like usual..
Although constantly passing gas, still quite painful when defacating and not drinking on her own.

I see more positives tonight..

I better not jinx it!

C'mon Fudge'y  xx

I hope this is the turning point for you & Fudge. Give her lots of kisses & cuddles for us all. I didn't want to come on the forum this morning, in case something had happened. Glad I did so, because things hopefully are looking up. I think you have to realise that, I reckon she's going to out live us. She's only playing with your emotions to see how far she can go.
:gp: Perfect for Fudge xxxxxxxx
