We went to the range on Saturday to buy some hay for the girls. OH just picked up the hay, we brought it and off we went. When I took it out of the car, I noticed it was all damp in the top corner. I moaned at OH and said, check it properly next time. Just open it up and leave it outside and it will soon dry he said.
Anyway, as soon as we got in, I took the hay outside, opened it up and it stank and looked moldy. OH told me to leave it and he would come and sort it out. I came upstairs and 5 minutes later he called me downstairs. It wasn't wet, moldy hay at all but there was a dead rat! The thing that I thought was mold was indeed fur. It was just awful. All I can think is that the rat was some how trapped in the bag :(
We took the hay back and got a full refund plus a new bag of hay.

Yuk!

My OH found half a frog in some hay we had once. I must confess, I was very glad it was him not me! :red:))

I dread anything like this. I wear gloves, I'd scream me head off if I saw anything! :(|)

OMG poor rattie :(
ewwwwwwww i so wish they'd check the bags!
I now get fresh meadow hay from a produce place, there stuff is really nice, but this now gives me the heebie geebies :{:p
Your poor OH :(xx>>>

Aw poor rat :( i'd have cried! Nasty shock though i dread opening hay too it's risky business! xx

Poor little guy, i hope that maybe when the field was mowed he just got caught up and i really hope he passed away and had no idea what happened :(

That's really good of the supplier to give you refund and new bag, if they hadn't i bet you'd have stood there till they did pow-powpow-pow ;)xoxo

It was just really funny because we put the hay in the black bin liner and none of the girls on the service desk dared open it when we said there was a rat in there. The Manager came over and took the bag out but I think he wished he hadn't :))

I recently found a rabbit leg in a bag of readigrass. I had put a pile of readigrass in the hutch and only found the leg later when all the grass had been eaten. I am more wary of delving into the bags now!

OMG that is disgusting i'd have freaked totally and disinfected everything ewwwwwww just the thought i've now got goose bumps :{:{:{

i've only ever had a crushed can. Luckily i found it or else my poor piggies would've been hurt grrrr

i can't believe a dead rat in hay!and a rabbit leg:)>>>,i would say that the rat could have possibly been dead before it was packed because rats have some mightyteeth that can chew through almost anything unless the bag was steelrolleyes,i feel sory for the rattie,i would be so angry if this happened to me,i got all grumpy and complained about weeds and dusty hay not o long ago,i feel little silly now:red

God i never normally check the hay i just stuff my hand in there, never again! I cant belive it thats awful. It seems to happen alot aswel since its happened to other members i think they should take more time in packing it. Its not just horrible it could harm our animals x

That was about as nasty a surprise as you could get - I'm not surprised that nobody in the shop wanted to have a look at it!

Thankfully the worst I've eve had was some nasty thorny twigs, and the one who ended up with an infected scratch was me!

A couple of months back we had not only several sacks with really nasty thorny brambles, but on average about 15 very large dead beetles per sack :( This is from a well known good quality haymaker too!

I always dread hay time as you truly never know what you may come across.

Aww, poor rat! Must have been awful to find it in there :(

When I was about twelve I found the front leg of a guinea pig (or some other type of large rodent) in the carry bow the pet shop gave me when I bought a sow.
I was so freaked out, but the first thing I did was check the legs of my sows to make sure that they still all had four. If it had been now I'd have probably run a mile :))

A couple of years ago I bough 2 bales of hay from a friend of mine who owns a farm just up the road from me. Horror upon horror - I found a pair of boxer shorts in one bale - his face was a picture when I returned them to him :))

He denied all knowledge - of course !

oh noooo!
How awful, I'm not good with things like that probably would have screamed like a little girl!

i got my last bag from one in southport - is that where you went? I'm scared. I have a brand new bag in my living room. I'm going to have to open it tomorrow as well :(

Still not brought myself to do it. they have to put up with just forage today! :)) Will pluck up the courage tomorrow :))
