I am going to have a new hutch built in the autumn and by then my four sows who will be living in it will all be full grown. What size is best but realistic. It will be two tiered with run under

hi there, thought I would reply as no one else has, and I'm only a new owner so have little knowledge.")

You may have seen it already but this page is full of useful info: http://www.guineapigcages.com/

It tells you about ideal sizes etc. It says on there that "Upper levels should not be counted in providing the minimum square footage" but I'm not sure if that is just for c&c cages or if it applies to hutches too.

Sorry I'm not much help, hopefully someone else will be of better help :) good luck with it!

Many thanks for that will put in for planning permission now! lol

I do believe 6ft x 2ft is the minimum recommended space for 4 pigs (obviously bigger is better)

but would that be on a single level basis? I have a 5' x 3' 2 tier hutch which is ample room for 4, take out the inch for the ramp width and stick it theoretically on one level it would be more that 6x2.

I am curious as I need to plan the space needed for my gang when they come inside and it will not be on one level again so need to know if the 5 x 3 twice is suitable or a 5 x 4 and a top layer/feeding area of 3 x 4 would be ok. That sort of thing - basically the complete footage square area needed minimal requirements (so I can make sure its bigger than minimal)

Apologies if I am not making sense, very tired.

Make it as big as you can make it. I like the link that Kikikickin gave as a minium.... :)

I have just ordered some c&c grids off ebay and am gonna make up a cage for my two boys so they have more room in my sons bedroom, unfortunately I need a roof on it as I have a cat and cannot risk my son not closing his door. Therefore once I have some more dosh may get another set. With regards to the two tier I would agree with the 5x3 being ample especially as I tend to attach an additional run during the day so they have lots of space.

I had a 5ft x 2.5ft indoor cage and this was approved as being big enough for 3.... The cages i had were single level with a mezzanine second level (which was discounted as additional sq ft). I'm sure ive read numerous posts that state the minimum recommended size should be taken on 1 single level - any additional levels should be classed as 'additional' living space as opposed to 'overall;' living space - for example a double 3ft x 2ft would be classed as too small for two - even though space is shared between two levels (i hope that makes sense) If you look at your top level you will see half of the 'running' space is taken away due to the ramp, therefore that level wont offer the recommended minimum living space for multiple pigs.

This is only what ive read though - some pigs require more leg room than others - minimum sizes are not law - only a guideline - personally i like to give my pigs more than the recommended minimum.....
