Hi guys,
The vets across the road from me called me yesterday to tell me they had a little girl brought in who needed a new caring home. Now I have a 120 cage which I only use for quarantine and as soon as I heard her story I knew I had to help.

Basically her and her sister were found in a box in an alley behind some houses. The box was empty aside from the pigs. The pigs were extremely malnourished and unfortunately her sister was too far gone and had to be pts 😥. The little girl who lived has lice and is on a treatment for it. She is white but her entire underbelly was yellow and smelly so I have used some pads with warm water on that. Her feet are also on the brink of bumble foot so I have some f and m ointment from gorgeous Guineas coming and she will be having them checked again next week. She is in quarantine (of course) in a different room and seperate cage, cleaning tools e.t.c. She is very skinny but does seem to have a bit of a tummy. She demolished some veggies last night so could just be a little bloated but I think I could be on pregnancy watch. :( We have no way of knowing her background.

Technically the owners have 6 more days to claim her but as the vet said it is very unlikely considering the horrific state they were left in. The entire vet practice was disgusted that someone could do that. Why couldn’t they have taken them to a rehoming centre instead of leaving them to die 😥😥

Some people are so :cen:! Well done for taking her on. There are some good people in this world and you are clearly one of them. I'm sure she'll flourish under your care and you will be able to see what a lovely piggy she is. Good luck and keep us informed of her progress.

Oh no how sad ☹ Sometimes I feel ashamed to be human! How on earth can people treat animals like this. It‘s a story played over and over again and never stops. These people are totally disgusting!
Good on you for taking her in and giving her a lovely new home. Such a shame about her sister though, the piggie must be so traumatised by these events. I would not doubt that pregnancy will sadly be a possibility x

I agree with all the above. She has a caring parent now so has a good fighting chance to survive. I wish you both the very best x

Good on you! She looks beautiful and will now have a happy life ahead of her. Whoever left those piggies in the box deserves something bad happening to them. What I really wanted to say would get me banned from the forum. Me and my piggies send you and her lots of hugs and best wishesvxxx

So great you’ve got her now, poor gorgeous piggy. How incredibly sad about her sister. People like this are disgusting, why my mum has a cat and I have two of her babies!
Hope she comes on leaps and bounds now you’re caring for her xx

Lily update, her feet are getting a treatment with the gorgeous Guineas foot ointment. I have lice n easy but I’m not going to use it, just in case she is pregnant. Her urine is quite strong smelling so I have swapped to a white fleece mat so I can see if there is any signs of infection. She is very sweet for a pig that has been through so much. Can’t wait till I can give her a cuddle but it’s going to be a while yet :(. I have used a warm water pad on her feet as there was crusted poops on them. Ideally she will eventually be bonded with Vanilla.

Oh my, what a sad story for the poor little girl.

I am so happy that she has a happy ending with you now. She really does seem to have fallen on her feet with you. Fingers crossed she makes a full recovery.

So, Lily went to the vets today for a pregnancy check. Now the vet felt her and basically said she was fairly certain she was pregnant. She had an ultrasound which was inconclusive. She has some bloat but no sign of pregnancy yet. The vet is rescanning her in a week and a half to check then. Praying she isn’t as we don’t know her age so if she is over 11 months her pelvis may have fused.

They believe the bloat is because she hasn’t eaten in so long so she has started bloating because she has been given food again. I haven’t fed her any bloaty veggies just peppers, hay and pellets.

Thank you so much for all the lovely comments.

Aw, hoping she gets over this bloat and is not pregers x
She’s a beauty x

Did the vet prescribe gut motility drugs? or isn't her bloat that bad?

It’s a little strange as she is pooping fine. So will just observe her and cut off veggies for a bit.

Oh she's stunning, what a cute face she has. She's very lucky to be with you x

Lily seems to be just as pear shaped today :( does anyone know if there is a way to tell her age? Would an X-ray tell you if her pelvis is wide enough for a baby? I am terrified if she is pregnant that she would have to have a c section and will probably not survive.

@Wiebke hope it’s okay to tag you here.

Hi!

An x-ray can tell you in the last third of a pregnancy how many babies a piggy has.

You can control to a certain extent the size of a baby by not overfeeding on the fattening stuff, like too much pellets or fattening veg and rather concentrating on a good general diet, which already covers the nutritional extra needs to a good extent because the actual extra amounts are actually very small. Our pregnancy diet commendations have generally borne out well over the intervening years.
The biggest problem is often to keep anxious owners from overdoing their special diet.
We are not seeing any difference in suprise babies from mothers on a good normal diet and care and those on a special diet and a longer pregnancy watch here on the forum. Key is your good care; and every day longer your girl is with you, the better her chances of a problem-free birth.

Please keep in mind that a c-section is a major operation for any guinea pig and not the elective everyday procedure that is has become for humans in recent years. Until about 5-6 years ago, the vast majority of emergency guinea pigs c-sections was ending with a tragedy for both mothers and babies. Thankfully the tide has now turned in this respect but not so much that it has become a safe elective procedure yet!

The good news is that even the very young mothers (and because of all the pet shop mis-sexing we are seeing a lot of it) have a very good chance of a successful birth. ;)

Positive news! We believe she isn’t pregnant! She had another scan and was clear! She is pear shaped still and has quite a bit of gas so just having to watch her.

She is clear of parasites so we started bonding Vanilla and Lily yesterday. It went really well, touch wood, and they are together today! I have had some really bad bonding sessions in the past so I am super nervous of saying it was successful so let’s just say *crossed fingers* lol.

There 160cm cage just arrived as well so I can get rid of the pen extension :)
