if you clean your piggies how do you do it?
i was in pets at home last week
and noticed they sell hygiene wipes for small animals, also shampoos
i could do with something like this especially as when mine are playing one has sprayed the other with wee :o :o
they do clean themselves but would like them to smell fresher
any ideas?

I have never cleaned mine and they smell just fine. I think bathing them would be tantamount to cruelty, they would hate it and it would really distress them. It's bad enough having to clip their toenails. ::)

I know some people will not agree I am one of those people who believe in bathing their piggies.
Mine have a bath approx. every couple of months and have done so since I have had them (the oldest is 6).

I will only ever use products from www.gorgeousguineas.co.uk as they are all natural products and do not dry the skin out. I would certainly not buy any of the commercially available shampoos and wipes. If one of them needs a spot clean I use an old flannel and some of their shampoo.

As they have had baths from the beginning they do not get distresses at all, in fact a couple of my sows love having a bath and you should see them popcorning when I put them back in their cage and they are nice and clean.

I have also never had a case of mite or lice. Now I could just be extremely lucky! Opinions are divided on this so it is down to each owner to make a choice.

I think that's a bit harsh. There are plenty of people who advocate bathing their piggies.
I bathe mine and would never dream of doing anything cruel to them :(

i only bath my piggie when absolutley necessary but they love it as long as you are gentle and only bath them in a shallow bowl of water mine sit with there feet on the edge of bowl and they love being towel dried i wouldent bath them if they hated it or if it was cruel

Some of mine enjoy their baths and with longhaired pigs it's a maintenance kind of thing. Some of my shorter haired pigs don't need bathing or haven't done yet. I've had the wipes for the dog and they're not much good - just mask the smell!

thats a bit crazy lady, Some people have many pigs or long haired pigs and they get poop and pee on them, what would be cruel is if you don't give them a bathe if they have tangles and poop in there hair.

i was thinking simular, sometimes mine spray eachother if in the run
i cant just leave them to it can i ?

Having seen the colour of the water when bathing some of my long hairs or pigs that come into rescue, I'm sure they must feel better for a bath in those conditions! No they wouldn't get a bath in nature but then nature didn't make them this hairy (in the case of Perus etc), selective breeding / humans did!

I don't bathe all of mine routinely, I know some people do and I don't think there's anything wrong with it. If the pigs are used to it - obviously it's best not to bathe pregnant sows etc.!

Once they're clean it's easier to keep them clean with regular grooming and trimming if necessary. I'm sure many short haired pigs go through life without really needing much in the way of baths or grooming, but other breeds esp. the curly Texels would be a real mess without regular grooming, trimming and baths. I've seen the state they can get into (not at my house!) and it's not pretty.

Ours have baths as and when required which is not too often for the shorthaireds some of mine have only just recently had their first baths.

Honey B my coronet has had more baths than the others about once every two months she is so good she sits in the bowl with her paws on the edge while i wash her. She popcorns like mad after as if to tell me 'Thanks Mum that feels alot better' :smitten:

I've had my girls for nearly 1 year and they've had 3 baths in that time. To be honest they hate it but I only bathe them when their backsides are starting to get really dirty - they will lie in the same place they pee/poo. I try and get it overwith as quickly as possible but to say its cruel is a bit much - kids get stressed out too and hate it but its for hygeine/cleanliness that we bathe them.

I bath all four of my guinea pigs when the get a bit smelly (especially the boys lol), mine are fine with it, I just make sure i dont take too long so they dont get cold

I have two shelties who get smelly if they are not groomed/bathed regularily...

One will try and leg it, the other will just bite me until i bleed!

I keep their bum hair short, it would be cruel to leave it long/dirty as it will get knotted and the knots pull on their delicate skin.

Someone reccommended a dry cornflour bath which i use on one of my Shelties as she is special needs so i don't like to get her wet.

We've had our rescues for 2 months now and will have to bathe them this weekend :-\ They won't like it but the Sheltie badly needs it as she is very smelly after peeing on her hair. They were also unwell last week and were too weak to move so just lay there in their own mess :embarassed:
Thankfully they're ok now! We've also been using the wipes to clean them just to keep any smell/infections away O0
