Just a general question really, how do you know if a piggie has mites? Can you see them, any tell tale signs?

I'm assuming scratching could be one? But do piggies scratch at all anyway when they haven't got mites.

When a piggie has mites they usually scratch or bite themselves. They can occasionally fit if the irritation is that bad. They have fur loss and red scaly patches. The fur does not come out if lightly pulled. This would be caused by a different problem It looks very similar to dandruff as it is very dry and flakey. Mites is usually treated by a vet either by a spot on treatment or by injection. Mites can be caused from stress. Hope this helps, rachel x

Invariably, the pig sort of jumps and turns to scratch the area at the bottom of the back and can turn to bite the area too.
One of mine has mites at the moment and I noticed for a few days he was scratching that area and biting it and when I examined him, the fur is thinning in this area either side of the bottom of the spine. This is how I know it is mites and I gave him his first treatment yesterday, the second will be 10 days after , which I have marked on the calendar! You cannot see the mite but can sometimes see the tunnel where they burrow under the skin but none of mine have got that bad!
