I've just read that hay shouldn't be stored in plastic (bags/boxes etc) as it makes it sweat and it goes off. I didn't know this. They said cardboard boxes/wooden crates are fine because they allow the hay to breathe.

I've just emptied my hay into a cardboard box (which now takes up more space in the garage @)).

Does anyone else do this?

If not, how do you store your hay?

Am also wondering if it's worth stocking up a bit given the shortages. Or does that defeat the object if it'll go off? How long does hay last? Anyone know?

I store hay in plastic bags, but it is in our pantry where temperatures are stable. I do not have a lot of storage space, so I can't keep big amounts of hay enyway.

I would not recommend keeping plastic bags of hay in a plain garden shed, an attic or another not insulated outbuilding. You need to make sure that any outdoors hay storage is safe from mice etc.

Re mice. My mum talked me out of buying a bale from a local farm on the basis I might bring mice home with me :{ or encourage mice to move in... ;)! (Mind you, my cats probably wouldn't mind that...rolleyes)

Great idea for a thread. I had been intending to ask this question myself.

I keep the bagged hay in the plastic bags it comes in with a clip on the top and the bale hay in a huge builder's bag in the shed hanging from the ceiling in the hope that the mice won't be able to reach it.

One of my friends stores her (bale) hay in large plastic bigs with lids on. Her piggy eats all of the hay whereas mine leave a lot of it. I was wondering if hers tasted fresher?

Mine has always just sat on top of the hutch in the bag it came it. However I recently (last week) bought a big bin to store it in as one of my rabbits was jumping on top of the guinea pig hutch and eating their hay! It seems to be doing OK in the bin :)

I bought a bale and have just put it in the shed on top of old duvet covers, would it be better to put it inside it then in case of mice?
We do have 2 cats either side of us
