Sorry if this isn't the right place to post the thread...I didn't really know what else it would come under.

I am starting to foster little piggies, and get my first pair on Sunday.
My little two have settled in nicely. & I'm obsessed with animals, so yeah it's the best thing to do.

Best to stop rambling now though :(|)
I was wondering, how do you guys weigh your piggies? Is it with kitchen scales? That's like the only way I could think {:|

Yes i use digital ones which is a pain as the pigs dont sit **** so the numbers are constantly changing, but yes, pop them in a bog bowl and on the scales, or some people use the pigloo....

Yes, I weigh mine on kitchen scales in grams. I do have a really big Cuy boar though and I have to weigh him on the bathroom scales! :))

I use my digital kitchen scales. They are perfectly ok for checking whether a piggy's weight is stable or not.

If I have a particularly fractious new piggy, I wrap it in a cosy or a weigh it inside a padded shoe box, so I don't get any suicidal leaps. Of course, you need adjust the scales to either the empty container beforehand or weigh the container afterwards and compute the weight difference if your scales have shut down in the meantime.

Thats how i wiegh mine. We had to upgrade to a bigger bowl :))

do you think digital scales are the best? or the normal kitchen ones?
mainly because seeing as i'm fostering, i think it'd be an idea to keep a book for each little piggy/rabbit i foster, and so i can update the shelter of their progress...even though it's mainly the handling they're after!

I weight mine on kitchen scales... I weigh the bowl without the piggies, then put the piggies in the bowl and subtract the difference. I don't have digital scales so it's not completely precise, but it is close enough for me to see weight loss over a couple of grams.

Ive got a set of big scales for mine, They where originally for laugh quantities so the bowl is perfect for them to sit in

I use the cheap scales with "tare" on them. That means you can set the scales up with the box I use on top, then put the piggie in the box and I get a proper weight.

They stay still because they are suddenly put into another place - use hay to line it if you want but use the "tare" before you put your piggie in :)

I use a food storage container that fits the piggies with a little bit of room.

In fact I'm so impressed with the cheap scales I started using them for recipes that are in grams, because my old reliable scales weights (pounds and oz's) mean I have to use the calculator 8:) I think they only cost £5.00 and I did check them against actual product weights to make sure they were correct.

Here is a picture of how I weigh my two, Redemption and Salvatore. It is my food scale. The bowl is made to fit the scale so that it won't tip over so easily. I cover the bowl in a plastic bag, set the bowl on the scale and zero it out (tare) That way the weight of the bowl and bag are already taken into consideration and the number you get is the weight of just the pig. Then I put the piggie in the bowl and get his weight. (I'll have to do something else soon, I think; Red is nearly too big to fit into the bowl now.)
