Just wondered how much faith you have in your vet/s?

There seems to be a lot of discontent in general, though thankfully some, myself included are happy with the vet care our guineas receive.

How do you feel? Good, bad, indifferent?

Barbara

first vet we went to - screwed up big time, and my piggy died :-\

second vet we went to - seems ok, certainly knows alot more about what shes doing, and is willing to listen to vedras advice. Happy with her so far.

in between those two we had two appointments with battleflats clinic which was recommended on this forum - but they had no clue what was wrong with the piggy either, discharged marvin too early out of their care, and didnt want to listen to vedras advice. also they are very expensive.
I would def. remove them out of the "recommended" list on here..

My vet is lovely but it is also hard to say really...

My dog is very sickly and there all the time - they are fantastic with him. His conditions are quite rare and they have consulted with many specialists so I know that my vet will seek help and isn't too proud to ask.

Rabbit has been poorly a couple of times in the last 6 months - again no complaints.

When it comes to the piggys, well, I haven't had to visit much and that is all I am saying so I do not tempt fate.

My first piggy Rodney, she had her teeth done but this was going back a while and it was done under GA and she was fine. My girl Meeka was diagnosed with cancer and I made the decision not to operate (and my vet agreed) due to her age and the size of the tumours. I let her live out her days and she basically told me when she was ready to go - vet handled that brilliantly.

So can not complain but when it comes to the piggys they haven't been tested - and fingers crossed it stays that way.

My vet is honestly wonderful, I feel very lucky.

I was reccomended them by a rabbit rescue and they have proved to be excellent, both in care and cost.
I have to travel some distance, but they are most certainly worth it as they really know their stuff.

My previous one however....terrible >:(

My vets pretty cool. He seems to know quiet abit about all animals and I always ask him a question when I go in not just about my dogs but other animals, such as guinea piggies, rats, rabbits etc :)

ours looks like Hayley Cropper and cracks me up everytime i see her but shes ok and pretty good, and shes a treasure to put up with our mad mutt as he barks the place down

my vets are a big practice with a hugh animal hospital they have a mix of vets a norweigen called Heidi is very into homeopathic as is Donal, my vet the boss is elderly but prepared to listen when I ask about non anesthetic for teeth etc he is also up for learning and keeping up dated with new ways as is his staff, they were wonderful with my dog charlie, and ALWAYS give my pigs every chance, maisie spent 3 days in the hospital receiving care and syringe feeding etc the bill was high mainly the anesthetic as it was £54, the bill was £98 but they did try everything they could for her and are genuinly sad when they lose the fight,
they also know thier patients very well and i am known as michelle the pig lady,

It's good to see that generally those who have posted are pretty happy :)
I think the majority of vets are coming on in leaps and bounds where guinea pigs are concerned. Sadly there will always be the odd one living in the dark ages though ::)

Could it be that as owners, as we become more knowledgable, we demand more specialised skills? I know I am very demanding pigmom ;D
Thankfully, though we have great vets, so no worries ;)

My vets are good, though it depends who you get....

MTP, who do you use? if you don't mind me asking :)

Gamston vets for pets 0115 9816262.

For guinea pig care Ive only had Max neutered there, so not sure how they'd be on other things, but I would think they'd be very good as they seem to understand small animals more than many vets. My rabbits have had quite a few problems and the vets have been excellent.

All the vets are good, but I particularly like a lady called Rachel.

Who do you use?

Who do you use?

I use Ruddington Vets, they are good price wise and will listen (in most cases) to your opinions/suggestions etc...

This is something I MUST look into, researching a good vet in my area. I don't trust the last one after my Jack died.

Sadly, competence with neutering doesnt always mean they are competent with other things aswell. I found that out the hard way.
Where I went before, they were fine when neutering Marvin, absolutely NO problem whatsoever - but they couldnt even properly cut Lilys backteeth, and failed to give proper treatment afterwards. :(

It's taken me years to find a good vet, and not long (well a few months now) found a brilliant one. Only to find out sometime ago that Paula is leaving!

As I know I can ask any question and ge an answer, I asked where she was going.... and she told me quietly! LOL

Going to go there for the piggies and Avonvale for the cats :)

Ways vets do things, whether they listen to you or anyone else, other people's comments, their own interests (pets), just many things to make a 'good' vet :)

Yes, true but as I said they are excellent with my rabbits and have a good reputation when it comes to small animals. One of my rabbits is in for a molar dental under GA today.
The rescue that reccomended them is mainly a rabbit one but they've taken quite a few pigs there too ;)

They are excellent, I have used them alot for my rabbits and guineas, and they have made a full recovery evey time!

I can't praise them enough.

My rabbit is going in on wednesday to have his front teeth removed, and i'm not worried one bit, i have a lot of faith in them.

Oh glad you go there too. I'm always reccomending them to people ;D

Good luck to your bunn.

Well, I have no idea where I will go if the piggies get ill to be honest.. I can walk to one in five minutes, but I don't trust them.. the next is a car journey away, but only 10-20 minutes in a car. They are really good with dogs and cats and seem really caring, but not sure about smaller animals.. soo, I have no idea really.

Anyone know of any good vets in or around South Yorkshire?

I am extremly happy with my vets. There are 3 vets in the practice but 1 of them inparticular is absolutly fantastic with the small animals. They neuter on average around 150 rabbits for me every year and have done lots of other complicated surgeries on guinea pigs etc. A few of my rabbits and guinea pigs would definatly be dead by now if it wasnt for them. What I really like about my vet is he is always willing to try new things (and learn about them), is not afraid to ask me questions and isnt afraid to admit he doesnt know something. I used numerous dodgy vets before finding this one though ?.

Roger is brilliant and lovely. He has saved Scarby's life twice, phoned me at home a lot to check Scarby's progress, has never even suggested having anyone put to sleep. He is very reasonable in price; sometimes he doesn't charge and will always look at a lump free of charge. We have been to his partner Anna too. She is lovely, but I have no experience of her as a surgeon/ anaesthetist.

:) I'm happy with my vets too,. Jenny Towers and James Brooks at Active Vetcare Reading. They both operate on guineas and rabbits successfully, aftercare is excellent (after a few pointers were made, but they listened!). X-rays and dental work are done without anaesthetic by both these vets and two at other surgerys in the group. They are one of the reasons that I like to rehome within my area. They have lectures from CCT too and are happy to ask for help if needed.

People come from Cornwall and Southampton to see them. :)

that reminds me,Caramels off to be de-fluffed on thurs so I guess I'll see the Hayley lookalike...arghh!

I'm still in search of a vet for my piggies around derbyshire area if anyone could point me to one then that would be great. :)

Maybe as more and more people seem to keeping guineas as companion animals, vets have realised that owners expect the same level of care that their other domestic pets receive ie dogs and cats.
There is also so much more info available on the internet about care and what can be achieved by good vet medicine and surgery.

I think when it comes to guinea pigs vets in general (and it may have sometimes been deserved) have had a very bad press from some quarters. This always worried me as I do feel it used to put some people off consulting them :-\

Attitudes are now hopefully improving. A large proportion of the calls to my "helpline" are from people in my area who have visited my site and are looking for a good guinea vet that I can recommend...so that's very positive and heartening :)

I haven't had to take my boys yet, thankfully, though I should look round and find a good one. I see from here that there are good ones in Bath and Reading but they are both about an hour away. If anyone knows any in Gloucestershire, let me know :)
