My piggy Adric was wrongly dosed with Convenia on Wednesday ( details are in a previous post). Does anyone have any experience on how long it is before it is cleared from his system? He was given it last Wednesday afternoon. I can find what it says for cats and dogs but the vet said a piggy may metabolise it faster.

Adric is hanging in there. We are syringe feeding him him as much as we can but he has little appetite of his own. I would say he is a little better but I know it may be some time yet before we see any dramatic improvements.

I'm looking at another thread. It was four years ago so it is likely to be outdated but it seems it takes 8-9 hours, though lasting effects I'm unsure of. The vet on the thread said it would take about 10 days but whether they meant lingering convenia I'm also unsure of, though due to how fast metabolism works I would've thought they meant lingering. Unknown antiobiotic given for possible UTI. Simon, great vet of the cat and rabbit clinic, was also mentioned talking about Convenia in this thread so may be worth ringing for advice

In any case, crossing everything for Adric xx

That's very interesting. I have been reading several threads about piggies who have had Convenia- some with not very good outcomes. I am really hoping that the drug might be out of his system now then. I think I will continue with the fibreplex and pro- c for at least two weeks just to make sure that his gut keeps working. I imagine it's best to keep weighing every day and gradually decrease the syringe feeding as his weight steadies/starts gaining. Does that sound reasonable?

Yes x I've only had to syringe feed my Minja who passed from a suspected tumour bursting and at that time her weight hadn't gone up, so not too sure but does sound reasonable. At the stage he starts gaining weight syringe feeding constantly could put him in a mood

It's used as a 14 day injection for other animals so will have a long effect sadly but hopefully not as long in piggy due to their metabolism. Keep syringe feeding and water and weighing him daily. If you can keep his weight as stable as possible and keep his guts moving with regular feeding and probiotics he stands the best chance possible x
