Hello all. Pugwall is on 0.8ml of Baytril for 7 days a day to clear a suspected, developing URI. Since starting the drug, his coughs have cleared up and he's sneezing a whole lot less, but his appetite has largely vanished - aside from the odd chew of chicory and picking at some hay.

So much so, on Thursday I started syringe-feeding him Critical Care to get some food in him, and Friday - day four of the Baytril - I took him back to the vet, who said his weight is stable (not what our scales suggest at home) and prescribed some Fibreplex (1ml x3 a day) to help restore his appetite.

He had 3 doses of Fibreplex yesterday, and one so far today, and has eaten one lettuce leaf and some hay. I'm still supplementing him with Critical Care and water.

We have one more dose of Baytril to go tomorrow morning, and I've been told to keep him on Fibreplex for a little while longer.

In the experience of the knowledgable forum member's, how fast-acting does Fibreplex tend to be, and how long after completing a course of Baytril does it take for piggy's appetite to recover?

The appetite should slowly return once the baytril has worn off; this can take a few days but you should see improvements. It also takes a few days for the fibreplex to really get to work on the guts. Please continue to syringe feed until your piggy is starting to eat normally again; just feed after the meal as much as she wants to until things are back to normal again.

Thanks @Wiebke for your advice and wisdom. I really appreciate it. He's had his last dose of Baytril today, and he's not lost any more weight since Friday when he weighed in at 860g (or 880g at the vets) - which is when we began syringe feeding him in earnest.

He started accepting a wider variety of foods off me as well in the last day or two, but only if I sit with him on my lap with the food directly in front of him, and his poop is still a little on the small side, but I think the picture is an improving one.

Just hang in there. it may take a few days still, but things should steadily improve and he should be able to make up the lost weight on his own over the coming weeks. During acute treatment, you are looking to stabilise the weight as much as possible. It usually take a day or two for poos to be processed, so you should be able to hopefully see his poos going up in size soon, especially once the baytril has worn off.
