Both my piggies have been itching like mad over the past week, so first I gave them a bath and shampooed special antiparasite onto them to no avail. I also powdered them with special piggy antiparasite powder - again didnt work. Last night I treated them with Invermectin, both two pipettes each on the neck. It seemed to calm them down last night, but theyre itching again now...how long does it generally take for the invermectin to kick in? I'm planning on treating them again in two weeks to kill the eggs as a kind member on here advised.

I've always personally been a bit sceptical of topical treatments, especially as guinea's have what my vet calls 'rhino skin'. Even on dogs/cats I'm not really a fan unless it's just a preventative method.

If this info helps at all: Noah got mites back in November, and so I took him to my vet, who said we should inject both the pigs with a small dose of ivermectin on the back of the neck, and repeat it later to kill of any newborn hatchlings (I can't remember). The first dose took effect within a couple of days and of course, we took them back for their second round - no more excessive scratching :) They hated me for it, it does require extra bravery (I cried the first time), but it worked a treat. It worked out at about £5 for the ivermectin they had.

All I know is that when pigs get mites it's important to repeat the dose at the key time, so they can't just start the reproduction cycle which might cause you to repeat it a third time.
