I'm thinking of adopting 3 guinea pig sows who are 1 years old, they are sisters. I'm curious on how loud they would be Can you hear guinea pigs from downstairs or can you only hear them from the rooms beside the guinea pigs? I'm just wondering since i live in a maisonette and have a downstairs neighbours

It really varies - some are very loud, some are quiet. It’s not just the wheeking, it’s also the running around their cage. A loud guinea pig can be hard from quite a distance though.

I have four piggies who live in my shed.
I have two who barely make a sound.
One who will talk a bit when it’s dinner time but isn’t particularly loud.
The fourth is so loud I can hear him before I even get close to the shed - he hears me coming as soon as I open the door to go out. The shed is about 30 feet away from my door.

I have a guinea pig room downstairs at the front of the house with nine pigs in it ranging from 7 years to 6 weeks and they are the loudest pigs I’ve ever had. They squeak whenever the hear anyone move, and when it’s veg time the noise nearly makes your ears bleed! The older pigs are quieter, the younger ones the nosiest. I love it!

I agree, it definitely depends on the guinea pig. I had a piggie i fostered who was so tiny but i could hear her from upstairs! Then i‘ve had some that barely make any noise at all. Once they learn when feeding times are, or the noises/patterns before feeding time that’s usually when the quieter, less chatty ones will wheek. I have found as they get older they seem to quieten down a bit, but since the ones you’re considering adopting are 1 they’ll probably be lovely and chatty. All in all they‘re generally pretty chatty and noisy but they do make the loveliest noises that it’s always such a pleasure to hear them.

My boys are free roaming in the lounge. Mischievous Master Boris wheeks at every noise that might involve food. Dignified Sir George is generally quieter, they both chut (muttering and quiet squeaking) when trotting around and sound like they need to be oiled. However, when they are zooming they do sound like they are wearing hob nailed boots. No noises I think that would disturb the neighbours.

They CAN wheek loudly, usually when they want food or are excited. How loud and how often individual pigs wheek varies. Honestly, I think the loudest thing that my current pair do is click the water bottle... I work in the same room with them and it's fine, but I think I would struggle to sleep in the same room with them. Misa wheeks when the fridge gets opened upstairs and there is the pitter-patter of little feet when they get zooming around, but other than the occasional excited wheek I don't think they would bother anyone who was upstairs or downstairs from them.

Yes to the hob nailed boots! I always tell Winston to stop thumping about, for an animal low on the food chain they really aren’t discreet 🤣

The water bottle!
Dignified Sir George is a bottle botherer..... several minutes at a time.....he actually lets more dribble out than he drinks!
Mischievous Master Boris needs to give him lessons in drinking silently 😂

My pigs are in a room where their cage is directly on the floorboards with my parents bedroom directly beneath… I don’t think they are loud but my parents would probably disagree!

It's good to know that it probably won't bother the neighbours

I had a piggy, Jemimah, who was so loud when she thought food was coming that when my husband started working from home he shot out of his study thinking something was wrong.
Naomi was also loud enough to wake us up if she was in season and Micah was doing boar thing 😁
