Hi,

I've recently started to plan a different structure here as I have sooo many hutches with piggies in. I thought it would be nice to have all the piggies that will stay here living together.

I plan to convert one of the sheds, using c&c, into different levels and have a large piggy playground.

I currently have 6, maybe 7 sows that I will try and bond but how many neutered boars should I be able to successfully get to live with the girls if the space is approx 6ft x 2ft on two levels and 4ft x 2ft on the third level?

Many thanks
Claire

Probably not the answer you're looking for, but in my opinion - just one! A neutered boar will still behave as if he is entire i.e will still hump and fight other boars. If he didn't get on with boars before the neuter he's unlikely to afterwards, and if there are girls in the vicinity then I'd say hugely unlikely that more than one boar could live in the group.

I've got one neutered boar with 10 sows - and he's very happy about it!

I know Ron tried a large group with two neutered boars and that did not work out as far as I recall, only time I have seen it work is in my friends setup and she has a huge ammount of space as the guineas free range in a large garden so plenty of room for two boys to avoid each other.
Maybe have one group in a 6by 2 with one boar and anotherlarger group in the other two levels with another boar?

My neutered boars still act as though they are "entire". They growl, stomp about and try to mount their sow companions. Then they realise that "things just ain't what they used to be" :{ and give up, but usually before that the sow has told him off anyway!

I have never tried mixing more than one neutered boar with any sows though, so can't comment from my own experience.

I am interested in other members comments though.

i've heard there's no way two boars will live together well if there are sows living with them

I thought this might be the case but was just hoping someone would tell me different. I have 5 boars being neutered today so will have a difficult decision to make as to who to bond with a sow, as a couple, and who to keep as part of a large group.

I expect people would want to rehome a neutered boar to live with their existing sow(s) so that might help?

Hope all goes well with their ops

Ditto Sophie's comments all the neutered boys here have been adopted into pre-existing sow groups one went as a pair as he was inseperable from his wife.

We paid to have one of our own original pets neutered as he did not like living we boars and he has three wives now all rescue sows who could not be re-homed due to suspected hereditary defects/medical problems

I have groups of sows living together happily without a neutered boar to keep order the herds develop a matriarch who is the boss, so it may not be neccessary to put a neutered boar into your big group.
