Having heard of the loss of Galaxy at TEAS who was one of the 285 made me think. Our Astro was one of those rescued nearly 4 years ago and in June he will have been with us 4 years. I was wondering if there are any others from the rescue still with members of the forum.

I lost the last of my 285-ers in the beginning of Jan :( I miss him a lot.

I'm trying to think of other piggies from that lot that were rehomed through where I work and if we have any further contact from their owners but I can't off the top of my head.

Sorry not been around that long but I just have to ask - do you mean there were *285* guinea pigs rescued from somewhere in one go? If so I don't think there's an emoticon to express that much shock!

Yes there was, if I remember correctly it was more than that. 285 is what was left over after rescues went in initially and took what they had space for at the time.

I went the first day that the issue was dealt with, to the owners home where around 9-10 of us from a few different rescues went to sex, health check and count the Guinea pigs. That was when some were removed (the ones in worst health, very elderly or pregnant of which there was only 2 or 3 amazingly) it was then over the course of a few weeks the rest, mainly single boars. Were removed and spread nationwide. It was a massive feat and a real example of how well the rescue network and community here can work together.

My Acorn, and handsome Blake were last minute grabs as myself and a colleague were leaving the property after being there several hours. We were not supposed to take them but she had insisted we did a last.minet sweep of the animals being.left behind. There was a hutch with some scabby fungal girlies and then another with 4 very skinny guineas which were at the time marked as being sows. We grabbed them all and put them in an empty carrier. Only to discover once we got back to the rescue center that the under weight ones were all boys. With no where else to put them I took them on foster until space came up. Needless to say Blake never went back to the rescue. He stayed with me from Feb 2012. I adopted Acorn in the June I think as I needed a companion for my neutered boy and for some reason she was being persistently overlooked by potential new homes. I had been seeing her at work every weekend so knew that she was the kind of sow my boar needed in his life and she was his best friend until she suddenly passed away in October.

I also had another little sow named Ponyo who came from the same owner last year. They had got a few more guineas but admitted very quickly it was a bad idea and things would only get out of hand again so gave them up. Sadly she was in very poor health when I took her on (first as a foster and later I adopted her) and she only survived about 3 months post rescue. :(

Astro has a had some dental issues resulting in the loss of his bottom incisors, one just over a year ago and the other last December. Result of an abcess. Strangely I saw some time ago another of the 285 in a similar way.

Wow. That's just beyond belief. Must have been so hard on all the rescues. Its so wonderful that so many people helped giving homes after the rescues had taken all they could. Shows the good side of humanity.

Okay so on that "on this day" app on Facebook I have just seen that today 4 years ago was the first day that we went into this rescue situation. I thought it was later in the month.

@karonus I was talking to my colleague and we can think of 2 or 3 piggies from this rescue who have had jaw abscess issues. All of them have been Swiss breeds.

If you have seen pics of the Caravanning Cavies I dont Think you can class Astro as a Swiss. But he does play th wounded Martyr well. He has me giving him nuggets and hay to his snuggle on the loft. We are even using a potato peeler on carrots and cucumber to give him strips of both and shredding his lettuce so its easier to eat.
