Hands up - Prior to owning Guinea Pigs did you have any thoughts about them?

I know I never thought I'd own so many Guinea Pigs or spend so much money on them. My plan was to keep one Guinea Pig on it's own how wrong was I!

I had never even heard of guinea pigs at all before someone bought me my first piggy, Fred, as a gift! Thankfully, my mum had owned guinea pigs before and was a BIG help! :) Now I have 9 and know a lot about them, and love them all! :(|):(|)

I didn't really like them as I had only seem them in pets shops and didn't like that they were so skittery. I don't know what made me want to get piggies really but I love my 2 piggie girls so much and prefer them to rabbits now.

I've always liked them and always had piggies as a child but as usual, Mum and Dad looked after them rolleyes
Only had my first two last September after years of having dogs, cats, bunnies and two children ;) etc. - now have six piggies, all but the first two are rescues ") Have a lot more time now the family are grown so they kind of bring out the maternal instincts I still have and are spoiled :x

One of my first memories is of our guinea pig Pepe :)) We had more when I was about 6/7 too, and one of my primary schools kept them so I have always loved them.
When I was still living at home for about 4 or 5 years I kept asking for a guinea pig but Mum & Dad always said no, then one day 6 years ago they bought my Bailey x)x)
My Mum loves them too so I think that's where my love for them comes from.

I thought they were ugly and boring without any personality, but ohhh, did my Georgie change my mind...and I love him so much I ended up with 2 more to join him!

Me thinking that they lack personality was so unfounded it's untrue. My three are all so different...

George is a grumpy old bum. Always has been and always will. He loves hooomans more than he loves piggies and is laaaaazzzzzy. He actually has to sit down on his bum inbetween running around during his carpet time!

Elliot is the most loving and easy-going out of the three. He loves humans, but even more he loves Oscar and George more than the world itself. He loves running and being active and climbing and getting into places that he shouldn't! Oh, and he's vocal. He talks a whole bloody lot!

Oscar is scared of hooomans but not piggies. He is the baby and trying to be the boss of the bigger boys and getting in lots of trouble from Oscar and George. George especially likes to pull his ears when Oscar is being a little tyke!

Before I got my first two, I had only ever seen one, my friend's one. She was a funny pig, they had a big basket thing for her to sleep in up on the counter in the kitchen, it was really big. And my friend would put her on the kitchen floor and she'd run around with the dog and cat and when she was tired she'd go back to her basket, I dunno how, like she went onto the couch and then onto the counter, must have been ramps, but I was too young to remember!

And I just liked all animals and was delighted when my dad said I could get guinea pigs. :)

I remember as a child, I think in grade 2, I saw some guinea pigs at a pet store when we went to get our rabbits. I thought they were silly stupid little things and wondered why anyone would want one as a pet. I didn't like how nervous they were.

Then when I was 25 years old I suddenly thought they were the cutest little things ever and have had them ever since! :) Going on 11 years now. I will hopefully always have guinea pigs. I love them so much. What a silly child I was! haha.

I never really thought much about them to be honest good or bad.... although I do remember looking after someones once years ago and thought they were a bit smelly :x mallethead I think I was a bit scared of them (thought theyd bite me) and they were scared of me too.....lol
x

PS Now I'm totally hooked :))

I had guinea pigs as a child, it was Simon who didn't know what to expect. He didn't know how talkative they are and that they each have their own little personalities. They were going to be my 'thing' and he would have no involvement. However, the first thing he does on coming home from work is to grab a handful of grass and pop out for a quick chat :))

I only wanted a pair... but we have steadily grown to five in two years rolleyes

I had never even heard of them before I got my 1st one and I only wanted another animal at the time because I thought my dads girlfriend was trying to steal my dog from me. This was awhile ago. I have had him since a puppy and we are so bonded, so I wanted an animal that she wouldn't want. I looked up small animals and decited I would get a guinea pig. I am so glad I did, because I have 4 now and I love them.

I always quite liked them as we used to look after the pair that belonged to my mum's school when we were kids, but never really understood how much personality they had until we got ours and they were indoors.

We got them because we wanted a family pet so the children would grow up with pets and learn to care for them etc, and we chose piggies because they needed less room etc than rabbits but were bigger and cuddlier than hamsters etc.

We were amazed at how smart Bubble and Squeak were and that they learned to wheek for food etc and how different they were, I totally underestimated how much both myself and OH would fall for them and when they drowned in our flood we were devastated, it was like losing a family member.

Now we've got 4 piggies and can't imagine not having them x)

yep so true i just wasn't that fussed on them liked bunnys and hamsters better never really noticed them.

Then was taken to a pet shop for birthday present last year think bunny or hamster! And them fell head over heals with coco just sitting there so then i was hooked

I've always loved Guinea Pigs.

When we were kids, I had a Rabbit and my brother had a Guinea Pig, that's how I fell in love with them.

Learned the hard way that Rabbits and Guinea Pigs shouldn't live together, though! 8...

Poor Flash. He was the cutest little piggy with a huge personality.
He was the fastest little guy you ever saw. Like a flash of lightning. Which is how he got his name.
He was the one that started it all and he wasn't even mine!

It wasn't until years and years and yeeeaaars later that I got my boys, though.
Now I'm more in love with piggies than I ever thought possible!

To be honest I didn't really fancy them much, although we did have one in the past, I never thought about wanting one. I started to really want one when I went to a pet shop and saw a little tri-colour abyy girl soooo cute...and ever since then I've been hooked :D

I remember looking after them when I was at school and taking one home for one of the school holidays.

After that I was always a cat person, had never owned a GP.

If I had known what big characters they are, I would have had them years ago!

If i am perfectly honest, i had never ever seen or even heard of them until i met my OH father and mother in law, they got us into them!

Wasnt exactly keen tbh. My freind has 5, and she got them all out and put them on her table. Very funny little creatures. Now I have 6, and I looove them all. From Mrs Grumpy Tam. To mad as a hatter andpotentially gay Plop.lol

We had guinea pigs when I was a child, so there was never a time I didn't like them. I and my sisters got our first own piggies (a couple between us) when we were teenagers and could be relied to to look after them ourselves.

Having piggies round the house was much more of a shock for OH, who had never graduated beyond a rather shortlived fish, especially after the number of piggies running around started climbing drastically!

I wanted some rabbits as a child, shop only had one rabbit left and so I had to settle for a pig as company on the advise of the shop. I remember annoying my dad because they had more rabbits due in the following week and he didn't want to have to go back so said tough, I'd have to have a pig. He was even more annoyed when the pig quickly multiplied to 2 pigs because we had to go back to get her company because the rabbit attacked the pig the following day.

Both were sows, but the second one was already pregnant and so I soon multiplied to 5 pigs and a rabbit who was that horrid that she was soon rehomed to a neighbour :x If there had been two bunnies I'd not have got a pig, wasn't fussed at all. Now it's pigs all the way!
