Hi all, well what an eventful weekend, as you know i have 5 beautiful sows. On Saturday I collected a sheltie boar and "would I like the girl he's been living with?" of course I would so now instead of 5 pigs I have seven with one maybe pregnant...but it didn't stop there on a trip to my local pet shop late yesterday I saw 2 tiny female shelties, after speaking to the owner we found out they had been dumped at the pet shop without their mother...I bet you can guess what happened next...I now have 9 guinea pigs ::) I'm taking the babies to the vets in an hour to get checked over but we've already noticed Maia seems to have a problem with her back leg, both have bald noses and their little feet are bright pink. We have no idea how old they are but they are tiny Maia weighs just 198g and Ivy 191g. I am so angry at whoever dumped them but at least they are safe and warm now. I am feeding them a mix of Gerty guinea, Burgess guinea excel, grated carrot and cauliflower leaves, they seem to be eating very well but i am worried as they cannot possible be fully weaned at such a young age. I will post pics soon. If anyone has any advice about bringing up babies without their mum it would be greatly appreciated.

Oh bless them thats so sad. Are they eating ok? Maybe feed off the back of a teaspoon if not and make sure they are drinking. They can have some veg just little bits don't over feed them. Just sent you a PM about what we discussed last week but that was before I seen this post. ;D

Hi, they are eating like little piggies and drinking ok from their bottle her are some pics, especially of their bald noses!

The 1st one is a satin :D Have you read up on OD O0

What could have happened to their noses ?

They are gorge! Could that be a fungal problem on the nose? Bless them, so diddy! :smitten:

Ohh a satin, posh pigs! Whats OD (sorry if i'm being thick)

Thanks for the link, that sounds quite scary. Do you think that maybe their mother died from it? Do you think it could be the reason Maia's leg is funny? I will definatly ask the vet about it, their appointment is at 5.40 (i got the time wrong before) so i will post what he says.

Sarah,
I would recommend printing all the information of from the Satin Guinea Pig website and taking it with you, a lot of vets are not Cavy Savy and not upto date with things within the cavy world.
They look both satin to me, Maia is a Tri-colour, Golden Agouti, Golden and White and Ivy is also a Tri-colour, she looks either chocolate or black, golden and white.
I have known of piglets been weened at 2wks old due to the mothers milk drying up. They could be small piglets also due to them being Satin, I know some Satins are smaller than others, it does not make them any more sicklier but just do not reach a good size.
It could be a possibility that the mother has died from it, but you will never know. Maia's leg could be a number of possibilities not just OD, it could be their was a few more in the litter and it was cramped within the womb, she could damaged it when playing, she could have been dropped etc.

Just got back from the vets. Maia's leg has been fractured when she was tiny, consistant with a drop or pull :'( The break has practally healed and there is nothing that can be done, the vet said she will lead a normal happy life just with a limp. The noses are not fungus but what we thought they have rubbed the fur off, trying to get out of some kind of cage, the same explains their little feet. The vet also checked their weight ect and said they look great and just to keep a close eye on them. Poor little babies had such a horrid start but i can see them becoming the most spoilt piggies in the world ::)

Oh bless them, glad they haven't got fungal sounds like they have been through hell. Did you mention about the Satins? Looking forward to seeing these grow up they are going to be stunners! :smitten:

You can never have to many piggies. and good for you for taking on the babies as well as the other sows, not many people would do that. xx

Thankyou all, I did mention them being satins but the vet didn't really seem to know and wasn't intersted with the stuff I printed off, he is really good with cats and dogs just not so much with guineas. The babies are eating really well and especially love grated carrot and Gerty guinea (they picked out all the Burgess!) I'll add some more pics later and some of the other new two, just wait till you see Dill he is gorgeous. (not being biased or anything ;D)

Well done Sarah for adopting the GP`s after such a terrible ordeal they`ve been through. The pics of the babies are lovely. My best wishes and luck with your new family. :)

Awww bless them the poor things! Good for you tho for taking them in sounds like there gonna be proper pampered piggies lol :smitten:
