Hi, new owner here. I just want to ask how many times should I feed veggies to my GP? I gave him carrots before but his poop turned light brown and somehow watery and because of that I'm scared to give him veggies. I also live in the Philippines and there are some vegetables that are not available in my place. Thank you!

Honestly, I think it really depends on the vegetable. Make sure to feed him vegetable which are high in vitamin C (due to guinea pigs not being able to produce vitamin C themselves) such as cabbage, salad peppers, spinach and broccoli. However, it's a good idea to slowly introduce these things if he's never had them before and keep an eye on his feces to makes sure it doesn't disagree with his stomach.
Other vegetables, such as carrots, are high in natural sugars. They are good for guinea pigs but shouldn't be given them too much because the sugar levels can disagree with him (which is probably what has happened to your guinea pig).
They should be offered vegetables high in nutrients daily to make sure they don't suffer from a deficiency, yet the vegetables high in sugars should be given less excessively.

I'd also suggest you make sure your guinea pig hasn't got diarrhea, which can be serious in them. If it's somewhat watery, don't panic. This is not a severe case and you can give him your own treatment. If this is the case, feed him lots of hay, refrain from giving vegetables and increase his water intake. But also take him to a vet to have a check up and explain what has been happening with his feces. The vet may offer antibiotics but you should never give him antibiotics that haven't been prescribed by the vet.

Hope this helps :)

Hi, thank you for the advice! I'm just really worried that he might get sick if I dont give him enough veggies. Thank you again!

Veggies are an every day thing. Just make sure you don’t give more than 50g/1 cup. Fruits and carrots should be an occasional treat. Bell peppers, coriander, celery, green beans, and cucumber can be fed daily. As well as lettuce (except iceberg). some veg is high in calcium (parsley, kale, spinach) so should only be fed no more than once a week, and not in the same week if that makes sense.

Hay should make up at least 80% of their diet. So unlimited hay is a must. Unfortunately you can’t judge how much they’re eating by eye. Pellets are maximum a tablespoon a day. I’ll put a link below to the feeding guide. Have a read through it.
Long Term Balanced General And Special Needs Guinea Pig Diets

If the poo is watery then you need to take him off all veg until it’s back to normal for 1-2 days.

Guinea pigs aren’t made to live alone - they’re herd animals. So you need to get your piggy a friend. If it’s a boy then you need to find him a boy. If it’s a girl get her a girl. Don’t put a boy and girl together, else babies can be made. I assume as they’re not common they may not know about neutering. I’ll link some more threads for you to read through.

Anytime! He shouldn't become ill if you feed him the right amounts daily :) But I understand how difficult it is being a new owner

:agr: With siikibam’s advice. While a good balance of a limited amount of daily vegetables are important, it is actually hay that is the most important part of the diet.
Carrots should be treated as treats and kept limited and not fed more than once per week.
