We have just adopted two 2 year old guineas, and I'm trying to work our budgets and stuff for their feed. Money is fairly tight for us, so i want to get an idea of how much to 'plan in advance' for.

How much hay do people get through with their piggies? I was looking on dustfreehay.co.uk and from the other thread on here it seems to be a good quality hay, although it is a bit pricey. How long does a 2kg compacted bale last for? Can anyone give me a bit of guidance?!

Thanks

shop around, we have a great farm shop near us who sell the most glorious hay £5 for half a bale that would last for proable a month with two, i have a whole bale that lasts a month but i have a lot of guineas, Pets at home hay is very bitty but comfey bedding is a good quality hay that is about £3.50 a pack and that lasts about a month, but really depends on whether they are indoors or if they are outside and how much hay do they have?

did that help :D

you would be better to find a farm, there is one near us that sells a bale of hay for £3.00 this is definatly your cheapest option. But you would have to have somewhere to store it.and you have to watch if it's in a bag or a bin that it doesn't sweat and go off.
Wilkinsons do hay at a good price 1.99 a bag, 2 for £3.00 which I've only just found, not sure if this offer is always on though. Hay seems quite green too.
I use p@h hay occasionally, as it is a minutes walk away so quite convinient if i run out.
If the hay is nice and green I use it for bedding and for eating, but if it's all dried out and brown, I use that for the bedding and buy a greener hay for eating, (timothy hay or the excel one in P@H).
I would say a bag of hay per week for me.

My guineas prefer Timothy hay so we buy it in bulk. Just bought them a 22kg box! The 2nd one they've had and we've had them just over a year so they last a while. I've got two piggies.

I used baled hay a £2 bag lasts me a week. I have 8 guinea pigs though :) When I just had the two it lasted me a while :)

I buy my hay in bulk in small bales,Its good quality medow hay and i pay £3 a bale delivered for any number of bales, i Buy 100 bales at a time with having the goats and horses

:) Thanks, that's really helpful! At the moment we're using the basic P@H stuff for bedding, then timothy for eating. The bags of timothy hay are so small though, i can't seem them lasting too long!

Wilkinsons is great. I bought a bag of gertie there and it was much cheaper than our P@H. Will have to eye up the hay the next time i'm in there.

Whats the best way to store then to ensure it doesn't go off? We have a brick shed where we're keeping our supplies at the moment, just in the plastic bags they came in. Is that ok?

if you have a cool brick shed it should be fine in the bag you bought it in.
you just have to be careful with a bale of hay from a farm,if you buy large quantaties alot of people have to keep their hay outside. if you kept it bagged or binned and it was in the heat it would sweat, and go smelly and mouldy.
in the shed it will be fine

Thats great advice, thanks! The shed does seem to keep cool, even though our garden gets the sun all afternoon...

Look around a lot. I found a farm near my house that sells 3 bales of hay for (I'm from the u.s.) $4.50 However we have a field that gets hayed in the summer so we usually use that. Also you can try and make an imitation hay by picking lots of long grass and laying it out in the sun for a few days until it drys. We do this before the winter to keep the hay going. :)

depends a lot on the piggies too....they need to have hay constantly, but some just dont seem as interested as others...if you give them grass that can help too :)

As long as the hay isn't at all damp then a black bag is fine, but I wouldn't keep mine in there just in case :)

Guineas also like hay to play in and love to have a pile of cheap hay in the middle of the pen to sit in/run through and munch then finally fall asleep in :)

i get through A LOT! ;D luckily i get big bags of lovely local stuff for quite cheap prices! they looooove it! and occasionally they get special hays as a treat (timothy, oat, herbal etc.) spoilt... ;D :smitten:
