Hi Everyone,

We're planning on getting our first piggies in the next few weeks but want to make sure we have absolutely everything we need first. How much hay would you recommend starting off with? Is it worth buying in bulk and if so how much do you use per month?

Thanks!

Are you any where near a farm shop that sells farm bales of meadow hay? This is much cheaper. You can get hay bale bags off of Amazon which helps minimise the mess. Mine have always had farm bales of hay and they love it. It should smell like honey when you pick it up.

Thanks guys, I'm planning on getting two piggies. We've just moved to the countryside so should be able to find a farm shop to sell us some! How much would you say you get through each month? Thanks

Hay is the most important food source for guinea pigs. Always have a ready supply Of hay for them x

We have two boys and get through 5kg about every 5 weeks, but it is worth noting that I give it them in a litter tray and hay rack, you could use a lot more if you give them big piles of it! There is also lots of waste but that’s to be expected as they pick out the good bits and pee and poop on the rest! 🤣

I have 5 piggies and a farm bales look lasted about 3-4 months. I don't use it for bedding as my Piggies are on fleece. I'll use more hay in the winter as they will need more to keep warm.

We go through 20kg of hay per month for 8 piggies, its always good to buy in bulk!

It also depends if they are living indoors or in a shed - outdoor piggies will use more hay as you’ll need a lot for bedding.

I use 20kg of hay a month between two piggies and three rabbits, but I also use it as bedding as they live in a shed
