Blackbeard is 7weeks and 3days old, when he came home he could fit in the palm of my hand, he's now just under double the size, he is growing but is it enough?

Looking at pictures of other GP's at his age on google I'm worried he's quite small.
He has access to unlimited pellets and hay and get some fresh veggies too.

Any advice on how much he should weigh at the moment?

Thank you
x

just weighed him.....

I've just weighed him on the kitchen scales, he is 6 and a quarter ounces....
Is this a good weight or on the low side for a 7week old?

are you sure you got the weight correct? 6.25oz = 184g - that is tiny for a 7wk old male - that would be the weight of a 2-3wk old

if he's doubled in weight that would mean he was only 90g when you got him - that is equal to a newborn! ?/

Ideal separation weight/age from mum is 3wks or 250g - ideal rehoming weight/age is 6wks or 400g

can you re-weigh him - are you using digital scales?

I'm going to try some other scales, these aren't digital - but yeh i was really shocked at this reading too.
I got him from a rescue (Tameside), the lady told me he was 6weeks old the day I brought him home.

This is him the day i brought him home

do you think he looks younger than 6weeks? I know it's hard to tell but I've lost touch with babies a bit since my other is over five now (we got the baby when his friend passed on), so any input is really apprechiated.

I'll try to borrow some digital scales and update you again, thank you for replying! xx>>>

He's gorgeous drooldrooldroolx)x)x)- dont suppose you fancy packaging him up and sending him my way? ;)

It's hard to tell from a picture if he's ideal weight - ive had a few babies and they've all been small enough to sit in the palm of my hands....

Is he eating/drinking/pooping ok? i would try re-weighing him, it might be a simple case of inaccurate scales....

He is adorable! x) drool

Perhaps the scales were wrong because I agree that is very tiny. Does he eat and drink alright?

When I took Sprout (about 8-9 weeks old at a guess) to the vet the other week he was 0.49kg (490 grams) and when I first brought him home he could sit in the palm of my hand too

re-weighed him

Thanks everyone, he is a cutie but very demanding haha!
Yeah, he eats like.... well like a pig :P

As for drinking, he didn't drink from a bowl when i first got him so have been syringe watering him. He's getting plenty that way - he's great to handle but quite shy on his own in his enclosure - (he is going in with an older boar on monday, which is the end of the two week quarantine I declared) - i figured he'd get used to taking care of him self with Mylo as support. And I have plenty of time to mother him at the moment as I'm on summer break from uni.

So yeah, feeding, pooping, weeing and behaviour is all normal and he's settling in fine.
I have re-weighed him and had my boyfriend check too on a different set of scales...... this time he weighed roughly the same, only a difference of about 20g - so this time the reading was 210g. Still tiny......
we also weighed other items in the kitchen to check the weights were accurate.

All I can think of is that the rescue let him go a few weeks earlier than advised? Because he does appear a good weight (not too skinny) for his actual size - But I am waiting for a reply from the rescue to check on that.

When I picked him up he was already seperated from mum, housed with his dad and brother, but they can be seperated from mum at 3weeks, I'm wondering if he's been rehomed at this point instead of 6weeks

I'll keep you all posted x.

Awh what a cutie!

He does look pretty little though, bless him.

We have a 'little pig' who's now about 7 months old and it also considerably smaller than expected (looks about 3/4 months) we've discussed it with the vets and put it down to her being a small pig.

Does he feel stocky? Or quite fragile?

Such a cutie!

The standard among reputable rescues for rehoming is 400g @6-8 weeks - if a pig does not reach the rehoming weight at 6 weeks, they stay until they do.

Baby boars are separated from the females at 3 weeks old if they reach the weaning weight of 250g (200g at the very minimum for large litters with smaller babies).

It's not the first time a forum member has had undersized pigs from this rescue.

Gosh, this rescue should not be rehoming piggies at that weight at all!
Straight away I was thinking is his age right, is he thrieving?

I'm really shocked that they have let him be adopted at such a low weight, and angry too.

Thankfully by the sounds of it he is eating well, and if you could monitor his weight by keeping a record of such each week.

I have looked back on my Finlay's weights whom I adopted from Milhaven in March, he was excately 400g at 6 weeks when I brought him home and he was 500g by 7 and a half weeks.
