I don't mind if it's normal, but they seem to eat loads! one is a proper little piggy!

I have 2 adolescent boys, they have a bowel of food once a day (Gerty guinea pig), 2 days a week they will have one in the morning and one at normal time when I get in from work. They have constant supply of Timothy hay (about 2 handfuls = 1 manger) every day, they will eat apple for England, although i always only give them about a quarter of an apple max between them, and yesterday they had a handful of grass as well.

They get through plenty of water (a bottle a day).

just don't want to over or under feed them.

They need fresh vegetables everyday...I hardly ever give mine fruit, they maybe get it once every fortnight - they can have more than this, like a bit every few days but we never have fruit anyway. Have a look through this section at different vegetables to be fed - they can have carrot, cabbage, cauliflower (leaves and flower thing), lettuce as a treat (no iceberg), peppers, stuff like that. Sounds to me like you might be feeding too much apple, is this the only fruit/veg they have? Apple is acidic I think and can cause sores around the mouth if fed too often. I would only feed it once or twice a week and start feeding a variety of vegetables instead. Introduce the vegetables slowly so you don't upset their stomachs or give them diarrhea.

hi, i agree with jane..it doesnt sound like your feeding them a balanced diet if all they are getting is apple and gerty, vitamic c is a nessesity with guinea pigs, which is why they need fresh veg everyday, you should be feeding fruit once a week max, like jane said apple is acidic and can cause sores around the mouth.

most piggies fav's are: carrots, cabbage, brocolli, kale, parsley (not too often though), peas in pods, corn on the cob, cucumber, celery stalk and leaves, if you go on the main food board there is a big shopping list with everything on that they can eat safely.

with mine, they get their dry food topped up as and when, if its looking low on epllets i fill it up, which is generally everyday, fresh drinking atwer and hay should be available at all times too :)

Thank you both,
These are my first guinea pigs and I have found this forum really helpful, I always have plenty of veggies in my house, I’ll increase their intake.
