This morning my new piggies have eated a bowl of dry food, cabbage, carrot and lettuce

This evening i refilled the bowl and they have cucumber and red pepper

is this too much? should i only feed them once a day? i thought as they where new it would take a while for them to eat but they are settling in nicely :)x)x)x)

Hi
It depends how old they are, I was told adult guinea-pigs should be fed 30g of food a day but I don't weigh mine, I just give mine 2 handfuls of pellets a day, I don't know if this is correct or not but it is what I do and mine seem fine on that. Mine also have a variety of vegetables in the morning (they are meant to have 1 cup of vegetables per guinea-pig per day) They have hay every evening which lasts them right round until the next morning and they have access to grass most days. Mine are almost always eating because they are on grass pretty much every day but they get exercise too so I think its balanced.

ooh thats ok then, i thought i was over feeding lol

They have loads of hay in there now too :)

Also the water bottles do you thing one change per day is ok or should i do it morning and night?

I leave hay and dry food out all day. That's ok if they don't gorge themselves on the dry food and are not fat, and if they still will eat plenty of hay and fresh food too. They get veggies once a day, and usually get handfuls of grass a few times a day, or put out on the grass.

It's good for them to have a constant supply of hay, they can eat it all day.

I refill the water once a day or if it's empty. They only have 300ml bottles, so the three bowls sometimes need their bottle refilled twice! I fill it in the morning.

I give my 3 a bowl full of nuggets and a handful of the "veg of the day" each morning before work as well as a generous pile of hay. When I get in from work they have some more veg and more hay :)

Also, I refill their bottles once a day unless they are empty when they are refilled then too.

I feed my breakfast, lunch and tea! Breekie consists of a handful of fresh guinea pig nuggets, and some fresh veggies. Lunch: a big bag full of herby hay and tea is fresh veggies and a bag full of timothy hay :D hope this helps

Meals are at eleven, one, half-two, three, five, seven, and nine, and if they want a quick snack inbetween they just have to wheek. ;)

i feed mines dry food in morning lunch is there veggies, dinner is lettus and dandelion leafs and i usually give in and give them odd treat during day. All day though they have hay to munch on:)

Plenty of good quality hay (should make 50-80% of their food), 50g/1 cupful of veg per piggy per day in as many servings as you want and pellets. These you top up until they have reached most of their weight at six months old and then slowly reduce them to an adult portion of 1/2 - 1 handful per piggy per day.

Mine get fresh veg, pellets and hay topped up in the mornings and evenings. I am rather lean on the pellets as I have cystitis piggies. They also get a little "night night tidbit" to make sure that all roaming piggies come back to the cage for the night and I don't have go and hunt them (usually they turn themselves in now, anyway).

thanks for this advice, I was wondering how much to feed them.
My newbies had a cabbage leaf and some cucumber last night alongside some dry food and hay.
this morning I have put some carrot down and refreshed their dry food.

You can slowly introdocue a new veg every time you feed them, but eventually, they should be getting about 50g of mixed veg per piggy per day, but you are free to spread it over the day. A mix of five veg eventually would be best. What veg and fruit you can feed you can find in the "shopping list" in the food section. Tips for a balanced diet are in the reference section.

Young guinea pigs do need their pellets until they have done most of their growing between 6-9 months old.

I'm with Wheeky on this one, though breakfast is earlier, at least on work days :)

You know, they get so happy about veggies so I prefer to give them little often rather than all of it at once, that way there's more happiness! I mean, if they get 10g 5 times they ar gonna be happy more than if they get 50 g all at once.

They get their hay topped up whenever I walk by the cage and see they've flattened the old down. I don't use a hay rack so it happens a lot :)

my pigs are fed dry food and hay all day. water bottles are filled everyday- in the morning i give them fruit and veg- depending on which piggy veg is in the fridge. when the weather is good they are put on the grass.#

I feed my piggies twice a day. Dry food in the morning, and veggies at teatime. I top up the hay whenever it is needed - usually every other day or so.
