I've read on different gp sites that you must bathe piggies every 6 weeks, please can i have some advise.

Many thanks

Louise :)

According to petergurney.com.. it says every 3 months once =)

For me i haven't bath my piggie yet becos 1 of it is only 2mths+.. another is only 1 month.

however i do wash the bumbum of the 1 month old piggy (coffee) becos she got diarhorrea =(

usually i will powder bath them 3 days once.. hehe i like the smell of the powder on them =)

my pigs often get lice from their hay (small black dots usually first to appear round there rumps and easy to spot in the white ones) so when ever i spot these (every few months) they get a bath in "lice and easy" from Gorgeous Guineas and this gets rid of them and makes the pigs coats all clean and shinny :)

Other wise I bath mine every few months.

I only bath my gps when they need it.Powder shampoo should not be used on piggies/

Toxic? O_o really?
but i bought the powder bath from the pet shop.. or they are reallie some meanies who jus wanna earn our $$$ =(

i will do some research on the powder bath.. petergurney webbie didn't say anything about the powder bath thingie :-\

here is oz, i don't bath my piggies at all, though if they have a dirty bot bot i will wash that. and in that 16 day heat wave they got a few cool baths but other than that they don't get baths at all. i think you should only bath your piggy when you think it needs one but no less than 1 every 2-3 months apart. good luck. hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: dry bath for dogs is corn flour, not sure for piggies. :-\ :-\ :-\

Most of the products sold in pet shops as safe for gps, actually are not.The manufacturers just want to make a profit, they do not care about the health of the animal.Peter did not mention powder baths in his books or on his website as he agreed with me that they should not be used on gps.

i totally agree with maryh...in my local pet store sells jazzies *chocolate with sprinkles on the top* when i questioned the woman she said that it was a safe chocolate!

guineas a lactose intollerent! when i found a product which was similar which wasnt made with milk i put one in for Xavier...who turned around and wouldnt even look at it!

it is all about the profit for manufacturers.

Chocolate is not safe for animals, even a tiny amount can kill a dog.

The only treats gps need are favourite veggies. All the rubbish treats sold in pet stores are a dangerous, and expensive waste of money.

to be fair my boys wont touch the rubbish stuff! having said that i know a woman who gives her gps bread and digestive biscuits 98) but hey each to their own.

i did say that in the pet store about chocolate not being great for most animals- she just looked at me like well if your soo clever why arent you working here kinda thing.

Awww.. such a bad lady attitude.. dun go back next time! hehehe =p

lol i only go there if i have to, thats if i cant get in to the next town or if the supermarket has run out!

yes do not feed your piggies choc, or use powder. I use a baby shampoo or my own since I am soo sensitive! I wash mine when they stink, since I live indoors with them all. A clean piggy is a happy piggy! I also muck mine out either everyday or every other day. If its just for a few small mucky patches, maybe use a pet cleanser! Which you put on cotton wool and rub away stains.

eeek no lactose based products for pigs! on the bathing thing - i have a feeling that when i bathed my first ever pig (clementine) she may not have been dried properly and developed some sort of chest infection... It could just be conincidental, but not sure! she had to be put to sleep as she lost a lot of weight and then wouldnt eat and her lungs were making a raspy noise... i'm hoping it wasnt connected to the bath... but who knows! not something i want to go through again... i think that if your piggy has lice or something that warrents them needing a bath then go for it... but other than that not sure how much of a good idea it is... (makes them look all lovely and clean and white though! - sparkly piggies!)

any tips on drying the piggy after a bath? that would be useful to know! O0

i don't agree with bathing piggies but to dry them we were told to rub with towel and then to use a hair drier to get them dry. always reminds me of the cartoon sylvester after he has been through the wash and drier and comes out all fluffy. so try the towel and then hair drier. good luck. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I bath my piggies quite reguarly, because I like them to smell nice and they are indoor piggies but also because they d quite like a wee swim around the bath. Good excercise for them and for short periods they seem to enjoy it! Maybe mine are just strange though?! ::)

I don't bathe mine unless absolutely nescessary. They get stressed out and so do I! It's also time consuming as if there's something going round (like lice >:() I have to bathe them all.

Most of mine enjoy a little light paddle in the water, its good for them, as piggies are quite lazy. I think a clean pig is a happy pig, cleaning them hardly ever is a little mean I think. They all love a fresh bed too with loads of hay! I know your not supposed to wash them to much as it takes away essential oils from the skin, but it depends what you bath them in and what you bed them on.

Thanks for all the posts, thats great advice. :)

Mine all get a bath when needed so I'll stick to that, they do find it quite stressful (and me!) but they love the hairdryer!
